hi jim

thanks for your help.

1- when turn the computer on it shows "No operating system found"

2- I made floppy from other linux system (which is now down with error message "2000:MBR Hard drive has changed, Press any key to enter the setup to update the MBR Backup") by following operation:

"Creating floppy with lilo on MBR
fdformat /dev/fd0H1440
mkfs -t minix /dev/fd0 1440
mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
cp -p /boot/chain.b /mnt/floppy
cp -p /boot/boot* /mnt/floppy
lilo -v -C /etc/lilo.floppy
umount /mnt/floppy

during "lilo -v -C ..." cmd it showed the message " image file not present"

3- no lilio screen. but i got succesful in getting shell prompt now. but it didnt mount root file system on /mnt/sysimage.
i have some important software and data on disk.

Thanks jim.
Any suggestion in the matter will be helpful.

best regards

But for now, it seems that the bit about MBR being changed
is mearly a BIOS thing after the install. Your bios must
be backing up your MBR, not a bad feature. As for the "NO
OS FOUND" problem. I am a little confused, answer these
three questions and I should be able to get you set.

One, what happens when you just simply turn the computer
on (no floppy)

Two, what kind of "boot floopy" are you talking abuot?

and Three, do you ever get to see the lilo screen?

Go to the forum and answer these questions and we will get
you up and running.

Ok, well the problem is that Lilo isn't on the MBR any more. What OS was on this system before? I am guessing some sort of Windows system, so the bootloader is looking for the windows OS.

What you need to do is re-install Lilo, then you need to make sure the lilo.conf is correctly configured.

My recomendation to you, is actually to use GRUB, its better, stronger, safer, and easier to deal with in situations like this.

Either way, the best way to do this, and safest to your data, is using some sort of bootable linux kernel. I know the newer version of Red Hat have a recovery one on thier install disks, but I don't know about 7.3. Either, way, knoppix is another good option.

That way you can boot up the system, and you can install lilo to the MBR with out ever mounting the hard drive. You can only do this if your /etc/lilo.conf file is set up correctly.

You could also install GRUB, but then you would need to mount the partition that has /boot on it to create the /boot/grub/grub.conf file.

I am going to go write up some instructions for re-installing LILO using Knoppix for you, if you need them, if you don't say so and I wont worry about posting them.
