Hi. a friend told me that i should learn to use linux instead of winxp. So i did and now that i have linux i am very confused. Every time i download a file it gives it to me in archived files that are code and i do not know how to get them to run. I am mainly concerned with getting ares or some other file sharing program on my system, however the install process has stalled because all i get are archived files that only have code. I am wanting to stay with linux but if i can't figure out how to work with this coding then i dont know if i will be able to... I am very confused and if someone would pleassseee help me i would appreciate it... thanx in advance. oh also i need a video media player if anyone knows where i can get one for linux.
I am using RedHat 9.0 I have an amd 3000 processor and a gig of ram. |

Hi,
you should move to Fedora Core2 (or FC3 I thinks it's out, and cool) the problem is that RH9 is officialy not supported by Red Hat.... http://apt.freshrpms.net/ go here download http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrpms/red...c6-fr1.i386.rpm this file to /home open up the console (or a terminal) CODE rpm -Uvh apt-0.5.5cnc6-fr1.i386.rpm apt-get update to install a application for example XINE (a multimedia player) just type apt-get install xine to install samba (the one you want for file sharing, so that windows can see your computer files) apt-get install samba almost always configuration files are stored (in RH distros atleast) under /etc/application_name/somename.conf for example the configuration for samba can be found at /etc/samba/smb.conf (these configuration files have examples in themselves so it is not that hard to understand them and create some basic file sharing) and always you can type man samba to read the manual if you want to read more then /usr/share/doc and here you can find all sorta documentation for the softwares you install, always start reading them here or use www.google.com and type something like samba example or smb.conf example Sincerely Robert B -------------------- Robert Becskei

ellejay123,
Welcome to LinuxHelp. Even though your problem is similar to the original posters it is really bad manners to ask your question in the same thread and to one that is basically dead ( from 2004). You need to include the distribution / version you are running and any relevant errors while trying to install. |
