What is the purpose of function libraries and name two directories where they are commonly located? Thanks for your help.

lib c 2.2.3.so - location: file:/lib use: to help gcc compilers compile things
lib c 2.2.3 -devel.so - location and use same as above.

PS. Almost forgot if you know the name of the lib your looking for just do a search for it and where ever it appears will be listed no matter how many places it is.
