I just started messing around with Linux and installed it on my laptop. I have everything working except for the sound. The card is a Maestro-2 (ESS-1968) I downloaded the drivers from www.alsa-project.org and extracted them, but the information on the site isn't working to install them. I'm assuming this is pretty basic stuff, if you need more information let me know. I have slackware 8.1.

I found Alsa instructions extreamly helpful and step by step.

When following these instructions what problems or errors do you run into? They pretty much have every bit of information on their instruction pages.

when I try this: ./configure --with-cards=es1968 --with-sequencer=yes;make;make install

I get:

loading cache ./config.cache
checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot creat
e executables.

Please, run configure script as first...

make dep

make -C utils update-deps
make[2]: Entering directory `/root/alsa/alsa-driver-0.5.9d/utils'

make[1]: *** [cards.config] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/alsa/alsa-driver-0.5.9d'
make: *** [include/sndversions.h] Error 2

and when i tried it with ./cvscompile instead of ./configure I got:

./cvscompile: /usr/bin/aclocal: /usr/bin/perl: bad interpreter: No such file or
directory
/usr/bin/autoconf: /usr/bin/autom4te: /usr/bin/perl: bad interpreter: No such fi le or directory
/usr/bin/autoconf: /usr/bin/autom4te: Success
./configure --with-cards=es1968 --with-sequencer=yes
loading cache ./config.cache
checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot creat e executables.

Please, run configure script as first...

make dep
make[1]: Entering directory `/root/alsa/alsa-driver-0.5.9d'

make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/alsa/alsa-driver-0.5.9d'
make: *** [include/sndversions.h] Error 2

So...I am assuming there is something wrong with my C compiler, but I have no idea how I would go about fixing it. Thanks in advance if you can help me smile.gif
