There is a new Linux distro out there called Ubuntu Linux. Ubuntu is based on Debian, easy to install, on a release cycle similar to the other linux distros (6 month release cycle, 18 month support).
They have released their first official version, called WartyWarthog. This distro is very updated and they are adding packages all the time. Currently it only has GNOME, but probably will soon have KDE as well. (Note: KDE is now available ... but not officially supported). Normally I wouldn't post a release of a new distro, but this one seems to be a very good starting point as a workstation for new linux users ... so I thought it might be good for the LinuxHelp users to try it out. Some press: http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=8286 http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=8407 http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2004/9/28/211242/712 http://usalug.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4125 http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558...,1651228,00.asp I have installed Ubuntu on my multi-OS test machine, and it is going to stay there for quite a while. If you are looking for a workstation version of Linux, give it a try. -------------------- Johnny Hughes

There are lots more good press concerning this distro. I like it, especially for the workstation.
This is more advanced and newer than Debian SID in some areas (Gnome 2.8, etc.). I have seen nothing printed about it that was negative, except the risque desktop backgrounds that were the default (and are still included, but no longer default). I recommend giving Ubuntu a shot if you are doing a new workstation install. -------------------- Johnny Hughes
