Exact instructions depends on the application. To extract the files in a console window where the tar.gz file is saved to enter the following:

tar -zxvf <filename.tar.gz>

Replace filename.tar.gz with the actual filename. The tar command will create a directory with the extracted files. Now look inside that new directory. Hopefully there are instructions in the form of a readme text file that will detail the installation instructions.
