I was going to download red hat and I noticed there are two different versions.

Each has three cd's.

The first is shrike-srpms, the second is shrike-i386

I was wondering the differences and which version would be better suited for a beginner.

You want the shrike-i386 ISOs, the srpms are the source files to build the OS.

BTW Redhat now longer provides support for version 9.0. Fedora is the decendant of Redhat linux and you can download updates.

If you prefer Redhat or a similar distribution then Fedora is is what you want. If you want a Redhat enterprise equivalent then go with Whitebox. If you want to see what else is out there go to:
http://distrowatch.com/

The most common distros are:
Redhat, Fedora
Mandrake
SuSE
Slackware
Debian
