I'm not familier with .NET or the mono-project. What exactly is it? Is it just a new programming language, or what? Is there any tutorials on the net to show you how to use mono to develop applications?

Though this is a bit late..
But i have tried MONO and i can say it is great.
Using MONO you can program in C# and compile and then run the binaries generated directly on Windows.(but this is only true for simple programs).

I have myself tried few things and it works out.Though the documentation is quite incomplete. It comes with GTK#.thus you can write gtk# applications using mono and C#.

But installation is a bit tricky. If you are installing from sources and very time consuming.
