One of the great things about open source is there is tons of good software out there for free, but that also makes it hard to sort through. I wanted to start a thread where people could recomend good linux software that doesn't usually come standard with distros.

I haven't really gotten outside the "stock" software, xmms, gaim, gkrellm, OpenOffice, Firefox, thunderbird, the gimp, those storts of basic stuff, but I know there is more out there. What sort of programs do you guys use and and what for?

lesio1974,
I like thunderbird for e-mail ... except it doesn't have a reply to list feature to reply to newsgroups and mailing lists ... so I use evolution instead ... other than like I agree with your list.
