One of the great things about open source is there is tons of good software out there for free, but that also makes it hard to sort through. I wanted to start a thread where people could recomend good linux software that doesn't usually come standard with distros.

I haven't really gotten outside the "stock" software, xmms, gaim, gkrellm, OpenOffice, Firefox, thunderbird, the gimp, those storts of basic stuff, but I know there is more out there. What sort of programs do you guys use and and what for?

Here is a flame war waiting to happen.

Opera is not the best, better than some other things, but can't catch up with Firefox. Sorry about that, its pretty hands down on that one.
