I need to install aim on my debian machine, but it says i need superuser privliges or log in as root. I dont know how to do either.

Now when you say this is your machine, I'll assume someone installed it for you.

In a terminal/console, please type 'su'.

If it asks for a password, try blank (just press enter). If it says the password is incorrect, ask the person who installed linux for you what the root password is.
