your internal Agere modem is a software-based Winmodem; this type of modems is very, very, very difficult to set up to work in Linux and since you have an external modem, you will better off when you take out that Agere out of your PC and try to use your external one only;

as for the external modem, sorry, but i do not have enough expertise to help you out; this modem is not on the Linspire hardware compatibility list; some of the external modem are Winmodems too, but i am not sure; hang on, most likely somebody more knowledgeable will join in and give you a hand;

good luck

G

update:

just did a quick google search on your external modem and it appears to be a Winmodem; it is listed as Windows-compatible, which is not a good sign;

Hi,

for that Agere Systems AC'97 Modem try this link :
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/scanModem.gz

download to /home
then unpack it
chmod 755 scanModem
and run as ./scanModem
this will output a few txt files into the folder you ran the program
these files (I checked them), should be helpful enough to start something,
but it will still be hard.
it should detect your USB modem as well, if your USB is working properly and detected by Linux
