Hi,

I did everything by the book, completed part 1/3 and wanted to try out on the same computer, can root send e-mail to root, but it won't allow me to connect via IMAPD , now I know I might have missed something [made a fatal mistake]

Since when postfix started up

Starting Postfix : postalias: warning: removing zero-length database file: /etc/postfix/aliases.db

how do I add users ?

just one example please smile.gif

oh...I'm trying to connect to the mail server from a linux computer using imap

Sincerely
Robert B

Hi,

well I finished it, and it's working 90%, I mean trought the webmail I can send recieve mail,
but somehow Evolution e-mail cannot send mail , it says :

CODE
Error while performing operation:
Could not connect to 192.168.2.200
(port 25): Connection refused

and I would like to ask you a few more questions :

where can I find the users mail folder, for instance if I created robert then david, where can I find their mail folder ?

when updating stuff, what is critical to always update , I mean in some kind of a order(?) ?

is there a way to make this mail server download mail from another ISP ? , I mean we have our e-mail adresses set up at a different spot, and from there it would need to download mail, and forward it to the apropriate local mail folders , is this possible ? could you tell me how? (pretty please smile.gif )

Sincerely
Robert B

Hi,

I'm trying this on the same computer, not using 127.0.0.1 as the smtp server, I'm using 192.168.2.200 (ip adress of the computer) as the smtp server (got no MX records, so I'm using plain old IP adresses instead)

here is my /var/log/mail.log

when trying to send and recieve mail with Evolution (same computer) or Outlook (from another computer )

root can't login and check e-mail because of a default postfix alias ..... I forward all root e-mails to my main user account (johnny) ...

Edit the files /etc/postfix/aliases and /etc/postfix.in/aliases

Look for:

CODE
# Person who should get root's mail.  This alias
# must exist.
# CHANGE THIS LINE to an account of a HUMAN
root:   postfix

and change the root: line to:

root: robert

-----------------------------------

The var/spool/mail must have 1777 protection can be fixed by doing the following command as root:

chmod 1777 /var/spool/mail

There is no problem with doing that ... because the sticky (1) means that only the owner can make changes or delete their own files, although all users can create and delete their own files in /var/spool/mail.

---------------------------------

For the warning: cannot access UNIX password database: error ... make sure:

ls -al | grep etc

shows /etc permissions at least as:

drwxr-xr-x 43 root root 4096 May 18 23:02 etc

Then make sure the files /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow are at least these permissions (use ls -al /etc/passwd and ls -al /etc/shadow)

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1387 May 18 20:15 /etc/passwd
-r-------- 1 root root 891 May 18 20:15 /etc/shadow

Check that the files /etc/postfix/main.cf and /etc/postfix.in/main.cf both contain:

local_recipient_maps = unix:passwd.byname $alias_maps

Check that step 11 from the first section of the guide is correct and that saslauthd is running.

(except don't restart postfix .... instead restart MailScanner with /etc/init.d/MailScanner restart)

-------------------
The user's mail is in /var/spool/mail until it is downloaded via pop3 ... the squirrelmail files for IMAP (when you create new mail folders) are in the users home directory.

Hi,

it seems to me that a few posts dissapeared...well no problem...

anyway I thought I would post this question again, so that it won't be forgotten,

I've got now spamassasin it's working ok, but the virus scanner havent captured a win95.cih.chernobyl virus, and I would like to ask what can I do in order to scan every e-mail ? and everything inside a e-mail ? (it was a ~gsetup.exe file that had the win95.cih.chernobyl virus).

And please be so kind and tell me how can I change that default quota limit to 20MB or bigger ?
I've tried a few things , but it just won't change....

And why is it that squirrel mail won't accept some rpm files and some exe files , simply says that NO DATA , how can I fix it ? , so that it will accept anything, since the virus checker checks it anyway,I wan't to try a 5MB FF7.EXE infected with Win95.Cih on the mail server, to see if it detects and removes it. By the way , I followed your guide, what is the default ? delete or try to disinfect, can I somehow make a command like, first try to disinfect if failed delete...?

I've updated the alias file in /etc/postfix and /etc/postfix/in , but I think I might have missed something, what is the command to create from the aliases a aliases.db file ?

And please if you have a few minutes, please put back your original Postfix guide, since that also changed back to it's older version , the one that you posted yesterday(?).

Sincerely
Robert B

Robert,

You need 2 do two things to get large attachments...

edit both /etc/postfix/main.cf and /etc/postfix.in/main.cf

add the following info into each file at the bottom....

message_size_limit = 31457280
mailbox_size_limit = 125829120

save the files and restart the mailserver with the command:

/etc/init.d/mailscanner restart

now you can get a file with the max size of 30mb and have a max total mailbox size of 120mb ... the default is 10mb and 50mb.

Hi,

thank you that solved the problem smile.gif

1.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I get this error when i want to forward a larger e-mail using Squirrelmail
CODE
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted at (null):0 (tried to allocate 4097 bytes) in /usr/share/squirrelmail/functions/imap_general.php on line 48

and Squirrelmail won't allow (for example) attach the latest nvidia_driver_version_number.exe to a e-mail, says
the document contains no data.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whilte ClamAV updates regulary, it won't scan some messages (don't know why) for a example it didn't scan that NVIDIA-[version-number].exe attachment (16MB file) , why could this be happening?
(the ClamAV module updates regulary and everything seems to be ok, but it won't scan the e-mail always)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sincerely
Robert B

Hi,

I managed to correct the first problem wich was quiet simple after I found it and understood how it works (probably)

/etc/php.ini

change line :
memory_limit = 62MB (if your max e-mail size is 30MB) , if I'm correct this is because you already have the 30MB e-mail open and when you try to forward it it imediately opens another 30MB e-mail and because this process is probably faster then the reaction time of php itself it consumes 60MB.

I also changed a few other things
post_max_size = 62MB (maximum size of POST data that php will accept

and

upload_max_filesize = 62MB

and check this line :
file_uploads = On (if it's off , then turn it on, unless you do this you won't be able to send mail)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And I think I have also found the possible solution the that Mailscanner problem :

CODE
May 21 11:44:35 mail MailScanner[3097]: Enabling SpamAssasin auto-whitelist functionality...
May 21 11:44:35 mail MailScanner[3097]: Using locktype = flock
May 21 11:44:43 mail MailScanner[3139]: MailScanner E-Mail Virus Scanner version 4.30.3 starting...
May 21 11:44:44 mail MailScanner[3139]: User's home directory /va/spool/postfix is not writeable
May 21 11:44:44 mail MailScanner[3139]: You need to set the "SpamAssassin User State Dir" to a directory that the "Run As User" can write to

using the Squirrelmail to send that exe file it is replaced by MailScanner and I recieve a mail which tells me that it's dangerous and is in quarantine bla-bla-bla which is GOOD smile.gif.
And I still haven't solved that *stupid* problem , Squirellmail (using Mozilla 1.4.2) won't accept some files , it says no data in document , (certain exe files, rpm files, tar.bz files)
what to do here?

Sincerely
Robert B

Hi,

solved 2 problems out of 3 smile.gif smile.gif

so if anyone has that NO DOCUMENT stuff when trying to add larger attachments (or if Internet Explorer hangs while doing so, and returns a NO PAGE AVAILABLE sorta error)

do the following
/etc/httpd/conf.d/php.conf

and change LimitRequestBody to a larger number 62914560 should be large enough, but half is also good( and I think I will use 30MB instead of 60MB).

Well then, only one problem remaining , how to make Mailscanner scan viruses that are sent via Evolution Email or Outlook ...?

Sincerely
Robert B

Edit /etc/MailScanner/MailScanner.conf, and set:

Run As User = postfix

and

Run As Group =
(blank)

It should now scan all e-mail sent into the server ....

Earlier you asked about a way to make the server get mail from other e-mail servers ...

There is a very basic mail fetcher already biult in ... but there is a better one here:

http://www.squirrelmail.org/plugin_view.php?id=50

I also added a section to the guide to add MySQL for the Preferences and Address Book.

As for blocked files ... take a look in the /etc/MailScanner directory at the files:

filename.rules.conf

and

filetype.rules.conf

That is where some files are blocked by default.

Hi,

I just managed to solve it adding your stuff, and I mixed up /etc/postfix/main.cf with /etc/postfix.in/main.cf I made the wrong postfix deny incoming mail, and made the wrong postfix to send the mail to the wrong directory.

Sincerely
Robert B

Hi,

don't bother with that Outlook stuff, it is because of this :

13:36:08.520983 mail.home.loca.pop3 > 192.168.2.151.1034: . ack 23 win 5840 (DF)
13:36:08.757931 arp who-has 192.168.2.250 tell mail.home.local
13:36:09.750978 arp who-has 192.168.2.250 tell mail.home.local
13:36:10.750979 arp who-has 192.168.2.250 tell mail.home.local
13:36:13.066737 192.168.2.151.1034 > mail.home.local.pop3: F 23:23(0) ack 92 win 64149 (DF)

those three lines are the problem of the 3-4 sec delay, because I don't know how to create a DNS server with that MX record stuff, but it's ok, that now I know that once I have that MX record and stuff it will be lightning fast

(I found this out with the help of a local linux guru, he just looked at it, tcpdump and tried send & recieve on the WinXP computer with Outlook and he found out that this is the problem)

Sincerely
Robert B

Hi,

have one minor problem with the /var/spool/postfix
and /var/spool/postfix.in

the warrning is :

May 24 11:01:19 mail postfix/postfix-script: warning: not owned by root: /var/spool/postfix.in
May 24 11:01:22 mail postfix/postfix-script: warning: not owned by root: /var/spool/postfix

I changed those dirs to postfix:postfix

when it was root

I got the error that /var/spool/postfix is not writeable by Run As User.

What to do here?

oh and I updated the system, it updated postfix, and some other stuff...
the MailScanner is still the same version, I don't know why but it won't scan e-mails when sent with Squirrelmail (webmail), but it will scan them when sent with Outlook or Evolution Email, what went wrong during the update?
I've been trying to solve this problem, but I just cannot, I don't know what have gone wrong here, if possible please help me (first the Outlook mail was not scanned now the Squirrelmail is not scanned, I'm so lucky smile.gif sad.gif smile.gif sad.gif

Sincerely
Robert B

It is OK that the directories are owned by postfix ... that is by design. Ignore the warning.

You probably need to run /usr/share/squirrelmail/config/conf.pl and select:
---------------------------------
2. Server Settings

then make sure 4 is set to SMTP like this:

4. Use Sendmail/SMTP : SMTP
--------------------------------
BTW, /var/spool/postfix is owned by postfix and writeable by postfix (the Run As User)... there is a problem with the script, but you can ignore those warnings.

--------------------------------
To permanently fix your MX record problem, you will have to buy a domain name (if you want to fix it yourself)...or if you already own a domain name, you will have to get them to set an A record with a name (like mail.domain.tld) and then set up an MX record that points to mail.domain.tld for the domain domain.tld.

My next guide is going to be how to setup a DNS server in WBEL...so if you have a domain name and a static IP address, you can register a Primary DNS with the registar of your domain (ie ns1.[i]domain.tld[i] (where [i]domain.tld[i] is the domain you own. You can then setup all the DNS records on your DNS server (and the DNS port in to the DNS server ... both udp and tcp).

Hi,

I've changed it to SMTP , and now Squirrelmail tells me when I want to send the e-mail :

Error connecting to SMTP Server.

but I have /etc/postfix/master.cf
#smtp inet n - n - - smtpd

and

/etc/postfix.in/master.cf

smtp inet n - n - - smtpd

What can possibly be wrong here?
(it send the e-mail without any problems using Outlook from another computer)

Sincerely
Robert B
