Few questions...

When I have to choose what kernel I want, it seems that there are two options for me.
gentoo Default 2.4 kernel with framebuffer support
&
smp 2.6 Kernel with support for multiple CPUs

1) If I pick smp (2.6 kernel), will I encounter any problems since I have one CPU? I'd assume not, but I'm a bit confused why they would have 2.4 be default, and not 2.6 (2.6 is pretty stable now, isn't it?)

2) I apparently need to make a /boot partition. It wants it to be 32mb, and the install handbook wants it to go at the begining of the drive. Do I have to have it as hda1? (I still have a windows partition, which if neccissary I could remove... but I really don't want to just yet wink.gif)

Besides those two questions, I'm good to go.

It doesn't have to be ad hda1 they just recomend it. You just have to make sure your chain loading your boot loader ounce you get there.

If I remember correctly, when you compile the 2.6 kernel there is a config you just set that tells it your running one CPU.

I would boot from the 2.6 smp kernel ... it installed fine on my pIII 800 mhz machine....

If you want, when you are ready to compile your kernel, I'll send you my current 2.6.5 config file. You should be able to just change the Processor and compile your kernel ... and make sure you install hotplug....

You can put the boot in a seperate partition ... or you can use only a root and swap partition. The partitions can be anywhere on your hard drive.

Thanks, I never had a /boot partition before, so was a bit thrown off. happy.gif

Sure, I'd love to get your 2.6.5 config file. smile.gif I'll be working on my Gentoo installation all day tommorow.

You will need to at least change the processor (unless you have a pIII) on that machine. I use gentoo-dev-sources as my kernel. When they tell you to emerge your kernel sources, do the command:

emerge gentoo-dev-sources

That is, in my opinion, the best kernel. It is the 2.6 kernel branch with all the gentoo-sources patches....

When it is time to compile your kernel, copy the above file to the kernel source directory as .config (assuming a 2.6 kernel)

Then do:

make oldconfig

make menuconfig

edit at least the processor settings

exit and save the configuration file

make all

make modules_install

cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel-2.6.5-gentoo-r1

If you want a cool bootup screen, after you are all done, do this:
CODE
emerge -UuD bootsplash

rc-update add bootsplash default

rm /etc/bootsplash/default

ln -s /etc/bootsplash/livecd-2004.1/  /etc/bootsplash/default

/sbin/splash -s -f /etc/bootsplash/default/config/bootsplash-1024x768.cfg > /boot/initrd-1024x768

use vga=0x317 video=1024x768 splash=silent on the kernel line in your boot kernel (see my /etc/grub/grub.conf below).
----------------------------------------
Here is my /etc/fstab for an install without a seperate boot partition:
CODE
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
# $Header: /home/cvsroot/gentoo-src/rc-scripts/etc/fstab,v 1.14 2003/10/13 20:03:38 azarah Exp $
#
# noatime turns off atimes for increased performance (atimes normally aren't
# needed; notail increases performance of ReiserFS (at the expense of storage
# efficiency).  It's safe to drop the noatime options if you want and to
# switch between notail and tail freely.

# <fs>              <mountpoint>    <type>      <opts>        <dump/pass>

# NOTE: If your BOOT partition is ReiserFS, add the notail option to opts.
/dev/hda8  /  reiserfs    noatime,notail  0 0
/dev/hda3  none  swap  sw      0 0
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0    /mnt/cdrom    iso9660  noauto,ro  0 0
/dev/fd0  /mnt/floppy    auto  noauto      0 0

# NOTE: The next line is critical for boot!
none      /proc  proc  defaults  0 0

# glibc 2.2 and above expects tmpfs to be mounted at /dev/shm for
# POSIX shared memory (shm_open, shm_unlink).
# (tmpfs is a dynamically expandable/shrinkable ramdisk, and will
#  use almost no memory if not populated with files)
# Adding the following line to /etc/fstab should take care of this:

none      /dev/shm    tmpfs  defaults  0 0
none      /proc/bus/usb    usbfs  defaults  0 0

----------------------------------
Here is my /boot/grub/grub.conf on the same install (with no seperate boot partition):
CODE
#
# Sample boot menu configuration file
#
splashimage=(hd0,7)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
# Boot automatically after 30 secs.
timeout 5

# By default, boot the first entry.
default 0

# Fallback to the second entry.

# For booting GNU/Linux
title  Gentoo 2004.1 2.6.5-gentoo-r1
root (hd0,7)

kernel (hd0,7)/boot/kernel-2.6.5-gentoo-r1 root=/dev/hda8 vga=0x317 video=1024x768 splash=silent psmouse.proto="ExplorerPS/2"

initrd (hd0,7)/boot/initrd-1024x768

The kernel line is kind of long, and is all one line (in case it wraps on your display) ... it starts with kernel and ends with "ExplorerPS/2".
----------------------------------------
my /etc/make.conf
CODE
# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically built this stage

USE="wxwindows samba mozilla gtk2 cdr dvd alsa bonobo videos oss mysql MMX sse gstreamer fftw flac mad mpeg nas xmms xv"

CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"

CFLAGS="-O3 -march=pentium3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -mmmx -msse -mfpmath=sse,387"

CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

MAKEOPTS="-j2"

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"

GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://128.213.5.34/gentoo/ http://open-systems.ufl.edu/mirrors/gentoo http://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/ http://mirror.clarkson.edu/pub/distributions/gentoo/ http://gentoo.seren.com/gentoo"

If you have an AthlonXP single processor, I would use this as the CFLAGS setting:

CODE
CFLAGS="-O3 -march=athlon-xp -funroll-loops -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -msse -m3dnow -mfpmath=sse,387"

the CFLAGS line is on a single line in case it wraps....
----------------------
To get the best GENTOO_MIRRORS= do this:
remove the GENTOO_MIRRORS= from my make.conf, copy my make.conf to /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf and edit the CFLAGS= line to be correct.

When it tells you you can run mirrorselect in the install handbook, do it with this command (sometime before you do the chroot command):

mirrorselect -a -D -s5 -b10 -o >> /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf

OR do this

after you reboot into your new kernel and it works, issue these commands:

emerge -UuD mirrorselect

remove the current GENTOO_MIRRORS= line from /etc/make.conf

mirrorselect -a -D -s5 -b10 -o >> /etc/make.conf

Having a seperate boot partition is a great idea. I had never had a boot partition before either until I install Gentoo. The reason why it's such a great idea is because you can set aside a small amount of space (i use 100mb as opposed to 32) and leave it unmounted at all times. You should leave it unmounted to prevent accidental deletion of your kernel image./
