hello i just installed linux for my first time today. I am a long time windows user but im sick of being attacked by viruses so i installed linux. i am trying to install XawTV to get my TV Card working but I am completely stumped. i downloaded the tar.gz file and got it all extracted but now i dont know what to do with what i have. if there's a tutorial somewhere or someone knows what to do PLEASE help me. Thanks

Hi,

cd /the_dir_you_extracted_xawtv_to
./configure
make
make install

but If you can tell us what linux distro you are using , there might be an easier way to do this

The commands Termina gave you are the ones you probably want to use. However, there are a few other things you are going to want to do.

Your best bet however, for doing what is right is to always read the README.txt file that should be included with any program. Thats the best way to make sure there aren't other commands to use, or anything else that needs to be done. In general

./configure
make
make install


should work for almost all tar.gz packaged programs
