New installation of RedHat 9.0. Very slow to boot (when it boots at all) Stops on
"Updating /etc/fstab". Will generally just sit there forever. However, sometimes will sit for very long time, then will finish booting ,and everything works just fine. I am a new-user, and appreciate any help you can provide.
Thanks!
Larry

Hi,

this should help you to :

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello.

> When I boot into linux, after much of OKs and some hesitation after
> "Entering non-interactive startup | Checking for new hardware" it
> hangs forever at "Updating /etc/fstab".

When you next reboot your box, and it says
"Press 'I' to enter interactive startup.", then hit I. Then it will
load some things anyway, but it will ask if some services should be
started. When it says something about "kudzu", then hit n, and then
hit y again until boot finishes.

> There might be some non-compatible (?) hardware like Adaptec AIC-7850
> PCI SCSI Controller.

Here is the info from updfstab(8) which actually causes this hanging.

updfstab is designed to keep /etc/fstab consistent with the devices
plugged into your system. It looks for devices such as cdroms, zip and
jaz drives, ls120 drives, and digital cameras on the SCSI and IDE
buses. USB devices look like SCSI devices to user space, so those are
supported as well, but are only added if they are currently attached to
the system (having a scsi device assigned to them is not sufficient).
