Newbie here. I am using Debian Woody and would like a GUI desktop and have hit a snag. When I run startx or xinit I get the following error...

Connection refused (errorno 111): unable to connect to x server
No such process (errorno 3): Server error

I am not sure what to do. I think I am missing the xserver package but have no idea if I am right. If I am correct, I still do not know how to install it.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

This is how to install X windows in debain:

apt-get update
apt-get install x-window-system

You also need a GUI system ... maybe KDE ...

apt-get install kdebase

Thanks. Everything worked once I downloaded the update CD and used it during installation. I had to manually install the x-window-system package as you stated.

Thanks for your help.
