Hi all. I thought I would try out linux for the first time. A bud over the internet said Mandrake linux was pretty good, so I downloaded the iso's, burnt them, installed mandrake (9.2) and rebooted. Once booting was complete, my screen did not go into the gui loggin screen, but the command screen. I logged in, then typed "startx." My screen went blank for a second, then the shell came back, listing several things, and an error toward the bottom.

XFree version 4.3.0
Release date...
X Protocol version...
Build Operating System...
Build Date...
Module Loader...
(==) Log file...
(==) Using config...
Using vt 7

(WW) RADEON: No matching Device section for instrance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found
(EE) No Device detected

Fatal server error:
no screen found

When reporting a problem...

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X sever ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 know processed) with 0 events remaining.

I only typed out the information I thought usefull, If you need more to tell what the problem is, let me know. I'm running a 1.8ghz p4, 128mb ati radeon 9600 xt.

what is the output of the following command for your video card:

Here is an example of mine:

01:0c.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage XL (rev 27)

What does the file (/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 ... or XF86Config if XF86Config-4 is not present) say in the video card section (here is an example of mine):
Section "Device"
       Identifier  "Videocard0"
       Driver      "ati"
       VendorName  "Videocard vendor"
       BoardName   "ATI Mach64"

I regret getting a Radeon. ;-_- Even if you get it working with XF86, it probally wont' work with openGL. Eck.

Perhaps the 2.6 kernel is diffrent (thinking of switching to that), since in changes it has several mentions to Radeon cards.

In the meanwhile, I'll probally just use my old VooDoo Banshee card for playing games with linux, I'll get better FPS in my games than with a Radeon9200. >_<
