I am in the process of putting Slackware 9.1 on my machine. I was wondering if Firewalls or Virus Software were nessisary under Linux. Are they built into the OS? If not, which programs are the best and where could I get them from?

Slackware Linux 9.1
Pentium 4 Processer
1 GB of RAM
HP Photosmart 1215

Firewalls are always a good idea, no matter what OS you're running (especially if you're using broadband). An anti-virus is pretty useless in linux though, because the vast majority of viruses/worms out there are designed for the Win32 platform. Unless you're running a server (which I assume you're not) you don't really need to worry about viruses.

You can use iptables (built in) as the firewall .... we have a script here:

There are many other available.

I also don't use a virus program .... but I do run chkrootkit several times per month.....loser's hacking into your box and installing trojan horse software is much more of a concern than viruses and worms on Linux. There have been only 3 or 4 major virus/worms on Linux (Slapper, Lion).

Here is an interesting article.
