You don't have the required library:

/usr/lib/libfam.la

You didn't include what disto this is ... but the package fam (it actual name is File Alteration Monitor) provides that file, which is a requirement for the program you are compiling....

For future reference ... the lines that told me the problem are:

libtool: link: cannot find the library `/usr/lib/libfam.la'
make[3]: *** [karamba] Error 1

AND

libtool: link: cannot find the library `/usr/lib/libfam.la'
make[2]: *** [karamba] Error 1

All the other errors are just cascading from the original error...

Alright...well, I've gotten past that pointed (used your hint to find problems and downloaded two packages to fulfill the dependancies). However, NOW when I try to make, I get this:angry: :

for this error, I would try this:

edit the file /etc/ld.so.conf
add these lines to the file:

/lib
/usr/lib
/usr/local/lib

save the file and exit,

then run the command:

ldconfig

after it returns, run it again

ldconfig

(this time the prompt should return much faster)

try the compile again

I've gotten past that point, but now it's telling me that XPM isn't found.

The XPM package is installed, as well as the additional pixmaps.

I did notice that the code says:

CODE
/usr//bin/ld: cannot find -lXpm

Note the two slashes. I've looked through the makefile for that but I cant find it.

The two slashes should be OK ... the library libXpm.so.4 (and libXpm.so.4.11) are in the directory /usr/X11R6/lib/ on my machine ... check to see that /usr/X11R6/lib is in your /etc/ld.so.conf :

In fact, it might be better if you verify that each of these directories is on your PC and add any of them which are on your PC to your /etc/ld.so.conf file

/lib
/usr/lib
/usr/local/lib
/usr/kerberos/lib
/usr/X11R6/lib
/usr/lib/qt-3.1/lib
/usr/lib/sane

Then rerun the command (do it twice):

ldconfig

ldconfig

Then try agian....

I don't have the kerberos folder but all those other folders are in the file already.

What I noticed is that instead of looking in the X11R6 folder for it, it's looking in /usr/bin/ld, a folder that doesn't exist.

There is an X11 folder in there, but I don't see any lines on where it is looking for the XPM in the Makefile.

/usr/bin/ld should be the executable file for your linker ... which is a step in compiling.

run the command:

/usr/bin/ld -v to make sure it works

Your linker, /usr/bin/ld, is trying to link (-l) the Xpm library, but it doesn't see it.
--------------------
You would need to go to the directory in question (where the error occured, probably the first Leaving Directory after that error line (and look in that Makefile)... and not the main Makefile
--------------------
BTW, what is your DISTRO ... there are many (karamba-0.17) rpm's out there.

/usr/bin/ld -v works.

How would I make it see it?

And I'm trying superkaramba 0.33 (gave up on karamba after a whole bunch of linking errors).
