Whats this Lie-nix Thing?

I have just installed red hat 9.
My problem is the whole system freezes when I try to acess the cd drive.
Can anyone give advice bearing Iam a newbie to linux,very impressed with it otherwise

thanks.apologies for not getting back sooner.
the system freezes no matter what type of cd I install,audio,images etc.
However I now have a new problem.I had to reinstall linux due to my brother messin around with partitions.
I chose not to use a password during install.But the system is now asking for a username and password.Obviously I dont have either.How do I get around this, any ideas
