I did my setup with one of the configurations on the VSFTPD site. I'mn pretty sure the problem is with PAM because I just found out that the default name is "ftp" and redhat had the file as "vsftpd." WHen I used the name "vsftpd," i couldnt log in and it would just say invalid login. Now that I use the file name "ftp," it stays at "password:" line for a long time and then it times out. I tried turning vsftpd logging on but then I get "vsftpd dead but subsys locked." So my problem is I don't what I did wrong for PAM. Please tell me how to fix this? I'm using rehat 9.

my "ftp" file in pam.d:

auth required /lib/security/pam_userdb.so db=/etc/vsftpd_login
account required /lib/security/pam_userdb.so db=/etc/vsftpd_login
my conf file:

anonymous_enable=NO
local_enable=YES
write_enable=NO
anon_upload_enable=NO
anon_mkdir_write_enable=NO
anon_other_write_enable=NO
chroot_local_user=YES
guest_enable=YES
guest_username=virtual
pam_service_name=vsftpd
listen=YES
listen_port=21
pasv_min_port=30000
pasv_max_port=30999

I ran this to check if it works:

[root@localhost root]# ftp localhost 21
Connected to localhost (127.0.0.1).
220 (vsFTPd 1.1.3)
Name (localhost:root): test

Can someone at least give me a link or some other form of help with setting up virtual users?

Could you please let us know which distribution you are using and release.

You have in your settings for local login and no anonymous login. Have you added any other users? Try adding a user called "ftptest", make sure this user has a home directory created to log in too and then try to login from another system on your network if at all possible. I am going on the assumption that you have the vsftp daemon running. Before we try to go any further, come back and let us know more about what you have.

I will be more than glad to help in anyway, I just want more specifics before we go ahead. Post the information when you can.
