Newbie here. I recently compiled a second kernel with performance inspector support, and I can access the network with my current kernel, but not with my new one.

Any attempt to access the network (even ping $HOSTNAME) yields:
"Network is unreachable"

The content of /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg_eth0 looks correct.

EDIT:
At bootup, setting up eth0 fails.

'ifup eth0' as root gives me "Could not get a valid interface name -> Skipped".

Any ideas?

OK I've found what's causing the issue but I don't have a solution. On doing
make modules modules_install
I get the listed below at the end. Any suggestions?

I have the same exact error....

at boot I get the message that "ifup could not find a valid name" and then it fails to get an IP

i'm using 8.1, i did the YOU and installed all available updates.

what happened is YOU deleted my nvidia drivers, so after reboot my monitor was out of scan range... so I booted to safe mode and was able to download and install the nvidia drivers again.

after installation of the new drivers, i am unable to get an IP... neither safe mode nor regular work... and I've tried to manually asign it, that doesn't work either.

i have a DLink router that assigns the IP... I'm a little confused as to why I could get the IP before the graphics drivers were installed... can anyone shed some light on this?

It looks like the make modules did not work.

I would do the following:

make mrproper

copy the /boot/config-xxxx file into the /usr/src/linux (or where you are compiling) directory as the file .config

make oldconfig

make menuconfig (or xconfig) and select the kernel new values

make dep

make bzImage

make modules

make modules_install

copy the new bzImage to /boot

setup grub or lilo...
