Nevermind - I wasn't logged in as root.

I am new to Linux and have installed rh9.

I am trying to install an asterisk pbx on my machine but am having problems with the cvs checkout procedure and am hoping someone can help me out.

From a command line I type in the following commands (per the instructions at

cd /usr/src
cvs login
anoncvs ' which is the password
cvs checkout zaptel libpri asterisk

Everything seems to work fine until the last command. When I enter it, the terminal returns a response of:

cvs [checkout aborted]: cannot make directory zaptel: No such file or directory

Am I doing something wrong, or is the problem at the side of things.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I just tested this cvs server, and it seems to be working fine. Are you running CVS as root? If not, then that's your problem. You're trying to download the files into the /usr/src directory which a regular user cannot write to. You need to su as root (just type su at the command prompt, followed by your root's password) and re-execute the commands you have there.

One suggestion is to use compression to speed up the process, eg:

cvs -z3 checkout zaptel libpri asterisk
