when i connect on i get the same error. so i have 2 questions.
1. Why wont it connect
2. Why does it show , which is my subdomain for a virtualhost in apache, when i connect to my ip.

everything works fine when connecting to localhost.

In your conf file, do you have either localhost or listed as the IP address ... if so, then the proftpd will only listen at that IP Address / name.

do the command:

netstat -an | grep 21 | grep LISTEN

and you should see how you are listening on port 21 ... and it should say something like this:

tcp 0 0* LISTEN

if it instead says this:

tcp 0* LISTEN

then your problem is that you are listening only on local host....

(Substitute the port you are listening on for 21 if you listen on a different port)...
