Okay I'm completely baffled. I've been trauling the net trying to figure this out but I've just got more confused. I have a UK keyboard. I want to be able to do ALT+keycode to do French symbols like I used to do in Windows. I know Linux supports this. Outside of X, it actually works but inside X, it doesn't. I checked my locale settings. They were set to POSIX. I'm not sure what that means. I changed them to en_GB.ISO-8859-1 but that didn't seem to make any difference. I use GNOME and the keyboard layout switcher doesn't seem to be the answer because that's just for using different keyboard layouts. And please don't tell me to use the character map.
