Hi Experts!

I have a debian box with kernel 2.4.18 running fine.
I've proceeded according what U wrote in
"Tarence's IP Masquerading Guide with 2.4.x Kernels & IPTables".
with the slight difference that I use a symlink
drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 4096 Aug 11 16:48 /usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.18
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root src 20 Aug 12 00:45 /usr/src/linux -> kernel-source-2.4.18

After doing all the steps including "finish compiling your Linux kernel", however, I get the following message (with the newly ocnfigured kernel running):

# /usr/local/sbin/iptables -L
/lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_tables.o: unresolved symbol nf_unregister_sockopt
/lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_tables.o: unresolved symbol nf_register_sockopt
/lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_tables.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_tables.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_tables.o: insmod ip_tables failed
iptables v1.2.8: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables who? (do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

While the symbols seem to be defined in the kernel object file:

/usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.18$ nm vmlinux |grep " nf_.*register_sockopt"
c0213978 T nf_register_sockopt
c0213a60 T nf_unregister_sockopt

I had the same problem with the older iptables v1.2.6a-5, as well.
Have you any suggestions?
Regards, mike

I assume that you have a bootable kernel (2.4.18). Is this a Woody(stable), Sarge (testing), or Sid (unstable) install.

Is the kernel from the install (bootfloppies 24) or is it upgraded from an older kernel?

Is there a config file for this version of the Kernel in the /boot directory?
-----------------------
It looks like the compiled kernel doesn't have IPTABLES support compiled in...

>I assume that you have a bootable kernel (2.4.18)
Yes, and its a Woody(stable).

>Is the kernel from the install (bootfloppies 24) or is it upgraded from an older kernel?
From the install. I have the sources from the web:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 23837917 Apr 14 2002 kernel-source-2.4.18.tar.bz2

>Is there a config file for this version of the Kernel in the /boot directory?
What I have put in /boot is:
System.map-2.4.18-030811 vmlinuz-2.4.18-030811

-----------------------
>It looks like the compiled kernel doesn't have IPTABLES support compiled in...
To be honest I repeated the kernel config more precisely according to the above mentioned guide chapter. Now iptables -L reports:
modprobe: Can't locate module ip_tables
iptables v1.2.8: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables who? (do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

The only change I made is this
[Networking options--> IP: Netfilter Configuration]
*Connection tracking (Config_IP_NF_conntrack) yes
*IP tables support (config_ip_nf_tables) yes
/they were set to modulated before/
I wonder why the iptables binary looks for the ip_tables module
if it is included in the kernel (should be)?

BTW, I have two install two modules after each kernel install,
nvidia and rhinefet (for the agp card and for the via ethernet card, respectively). I doubt they can hide the kernel's ip_tables symbols.

I have a dual boot machine that has Debian SID and Gentoo installed, but I am in the middle of a gentoo compile of Gnome / Mozilla ... as soon as it gets finished I'll boot into debain and look at the setup of the kernel and iptables on debian...

after you made the changes in make menuconfig, did you recompile the kernel .....

make dep
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install

It looks as if you do not have an initrd image for this kernel ... nothing wrong with not having one.

yes, and I installed it, too. And it is running.

>It looks as if you do not have an initrd image for this kernel ... nothing wrong with not having one.
Would that solve my problem?
I have no initrd image. As far as I see, it is needed mostly for SCSI drives /which are nice but I don't have any/.

Still, I don't understand, how these symbols remain unresolved, if vmlinuz defines them?
Is bzImage not built from /usr/src/linux/vmlinuz?

hughesjr, have you checked your iptables on debian? Version #s?

I finally booted up on my debian box ... it is SID, not woody. But, I do have a compiled 2.4.18 kernel from the Woody bootfloppies install. Below is the config file from my compile. Backup your .config in the /usr/src/kernel-source directory and you can use then use the posted config file as your .config ... [make sure you backup your .config first...move it out of the kernel source directory, so you have it for reference ... I always copy the .config I used to make a kernel into the /boot directory and name it config-version same as kernel so I can recompile later, since I have 3 or 4 kernels on most my installs].
then do these commands inside the kernel source directory:
make mrproper

(this will erase any .config file in the kernel-source directory ... make sure you moved your old .config out!)...then

put the .config code, at the bottom of this post, in your source directory as the file .config, then

make oldconfig

answer any questions asked ... then

make menuconfig

now look at all the settings and see if you need anything changed (like processor or other hardware). Save and exit from menuconfig Then :

make dep

then

make bzImage

then

make modules

then

make modules_install

then
from within the kernel source directory, copy the arch/i386/boot/bzImage file to the /boot directory ... in /boot call it something like vmlinuz-2.4.18-new ...

cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-new

then go to the / directory and create a link named vmlinuz-2.4.18-new to /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-new like this:

cd /
ln -s /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-new vmlinuz-2.4.18-new

then edit the file /etc/lilo.conf (if you are using lilo as the debain boot loader) and add the bottom to the file:

CODE
image=/vmlinuz-2.4.18-new
       label=vmlinuz-2.4.18-new
       read-only
       optional

then run the command:

lilo

to add the new kernel to the boot menu....then reboot and pick vmlinuz-2.4.18-new to boot from and see if you can load IPTABLES ....

I am using iptables_1.2.8-4_i386.deb with SID, but any version should work ... and my 2-4-18 kernel does boot and work with iptables....
