Anyone who uses linux knows that there is a wealth of information on the internet to help them in their daily tasks. Thousands of users around the world have spent countless hours writing and perfecting Guides, FAQs, HOWTOs, etc. Here at LinuxHelp.ca, we are no different. Over the years we have gathered information from several sources including current and past members of the LinuxHelp staff to help visitors with any questions they may have with Linux.

In the past, we have offered technical support using the IRC (Internet Relay Chat) medium which provided a real-time question/answer conversation. While the end user received their answers almost immediatly, this did prove inefficient for 2 reasons. One, this required LinuxHelp.ca members to constantly be available online in real-time to help the user. And two, questions were offten repeated over and over due to the lack of "history" that the IRC medium could no provide.

These forums were created to help users with more specific questions that require a peer-to-peer conversation, and will allow future users to view the conversations and possibly help them with the same or similier issue. Along with this, it allows the "answerers" to respond on their time frame, which is much more attractive to them.

Linuxhelp.ca has always been a "user helping user" atmosphere. No question is too "newbish" to ask, and we do not tolerate flaming towards anyone. In the end, this provides everyone with a comfortable, friendly medium, where anyone can ask a question, and anyone can answer it.

If you find these forums useful and have some time on your hands from time to time, please feel free to drop back and try to help out by answer other users questions.

Before posting your question, make sure you check out the other areas of LinuxHelp.ca for possible answers. The staff here have worked many hours to create and organize information. The following are some useful sections to check out:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) - A collection of Frequently Asked Questions from several sources including Distributions, Software, Window Managers and more. Often times these FAQs come right from the official sites.

LinuxHelp.ca Guides - An in-valuable collection of in-depth guides. The majority of these were created by Linuxhelp.ca members which includes many topics from kernel compiling to webserver setup to security. This should definitly be checked out by all users.

HOWTOs - The Linux Documentation Project has long been a source for many new and experienced linux users for information regarding many aspects of the Linux Operating System. This link will take you to a mirror of the project here at Linuxhelp.

Be sure to browse through the entire website during your visit. There is a lot of information available that should help you.

Thank you for visiting,

I just wanted to add onto this.

If you are posting a question in the Help Forums, please include as much information as possible.

This includes:

a) Your Linux Distribution and Verison Number (Example: Red Hat Linux 9)
B) The exact error messages
c) How you came about the error (what steps were taken etc)
d) If it is hardware related please include make/models of the hardware etc.

Thanks for your continued support!

We would ask that when you ask a question in our forums that you not use offensive language. This is not the place for expletives, and it is bad taste to be so rude when asking people to help you.

Continued use of obscene or profane expletives will result in your account for this forum being disabled.

This is not a Warez, APPZ, or Crackz site.

We will not provide Keys to software that requires purchase ... and we won't allow posts that contain keys. There are many sites on the web where you can obtain keys and cracked software ... this is not one of them.

Please don't ask for keys in the forums ... and if they are asked for, please don't provide that information.

Thanks...

One more thing that I would like to add. As much as we enjoying helping the users to the forums, please remember to keep all your questions to the forums only. Please do not Private Message any of the moderators to ask a general or specific question.

When you keep your questions to the forums, it leaves a permanent place for them just in case you or anyone else runs into the same problem, you can just come back and search the forums for the answer.

The moderating team will not respond to linux questions/answers through private messages, only forum-specific issues that need to be addressed. Please remember this, thank you.
