I'm booting on a Dell Vostro 2510 off of a live USB. When booting normally, DSL hangs on the screen with two penguins in the top left corner. A white rectangle the size of one text character appears for a minute, then disappears.

When booting in failsafe mode, an error comes up: "Can't find KNOPPIX filesystem, sorry. Dropping you to a (very limited) shell." This error appears right after Welcome to DSL and the warranty disclaimer.

How can I fix this?
