When I type in, tar -xvf bt5up.tar I get the message This does not look like a tar archive. This is to spite me looking up tutorials on opening tar files which give exactly the same input, although bt5up is replaced with file. I have hit a brick wall trying to get this solved. Help would be very much appreciated.

The tar file could be corrupted or maybe compressed. You could try
tar -jxvf bt5up.tar (use actual file name) |
