I installed my linux and set a / for the mount point on my linux partition... thus every folder stems down from / . I am however begining to wonder if that was such a good idea! Im trying to install a half-life server in /usr/local/games/hlds folder under a normal user (jdklusman - didn't want to screw up linux by using root) the server starts up ok if i run it from the directory, however i need to run a script to get it to start up on boot. Every time i run this script i get a permision denied! Is there a easy way to grant permisions for certain folder without exposeing valnurablitys? I am also running apache web server and have my default document directory at /var/www/html/
My Half-life server runs pyschostats which needs to right to my document directory every 20 min. to update the stats, i want to do this all using the user jdklusman.
Should i format and setup my filesystem different to ease the pain of permisions? or is this setup a-ok? If u were me how would u set stuff up?

who owns the /var/www/html directory? root? apache? If it's apache just open up /etc/group and add your user to the apache group and ensure that the directory is 775 and owned by apache.apache.

Just play with the permissions a little and you should get it to work
