Computer is Mandriva 10.0. cdrom always worked but when power supply failed I took it to local Microcenter. They diagnosed the problem
and installed a new power supply. Since then cdrom hasn't worked. Took it back to microcenter and they found that the BIOS had been altered
so that the cdrom was the last to boot. That was changed and they were able to boot from a cdrom and also read a cd. When I brought it home
it now won't boot from a cdrom or read one. I tried mounting it with : sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom
but that doesn't mount it and I get the following in /var/log/messages.

Apr 27 09:29:48 localhost klogd: sr 3:0:1:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
Apr 27 09:29:48 localhost klogd: sr 3:0:1:0: [sr0] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]

I'm wondering if the problem is in the cdrom itself and may be intermittent.

thanks,

Jerry

Could be hardware but make sure the data cable is plugged into the drive correctly.

By the way... Mandriva is a bit old and I would recommend an upgrade. Mageia (www.mageia.org/en/) is the new free version of Mandriva.

Thanks Michaelk. It did work on one occasion after the problem started. I'm thinking it may be a dirty lens because on occasion it complains it can't read the superblock.

This is now a backup computer. I just got a new box and put Mint on it , kde version. I think Mageia is still a work in progress. We'll see.
