Sorry if this question has been asked millions of times, so here it goes " How to create short cuts/icon to run programs instead of using the run command from the main menu?" I am pretty sure that I am over looking something but what?

In addition what wm are you using KDE, Gnome etc..

For instance in KDE its similar to windows. Right click on an empty space on the desktop. Select create new application. Add name of shortcut. Select application.
Select Done or maybe Apply or whatever do it button is.
