Hiya

It occured to me today that pretty much no one makes PAQ's pages?!?!

Why is this? I am aware that it would take quite some time to set up, but save a heck of alot of time for everyone wanting to know answers to questions, and those giving the answers.

I know i'm new to this area, but I'll volunter to puting in some of the legwork to maintain it and get it running.

Then maybe oneday you could right a book with it!!

What are your thoughts anyone?

Anyone who helps run/maintain this site got a view of this idea?

Jay-Jay

I've thought of this before, but couldn't think of a logical way to do it. By PAQ, i'm assuming means Previously Asked Questions. While it would be nice, this forum already includes a Search function that can search by keywords. While this will never give you 100% accurate results, it will get you to the right direction.

But, maybe what i'm thinking is different from what your thinking. Would you be able to do up a small example and email it to cquilliam@thegoodtimes.ca to me? I'll forward it to Joey (website owner/maintainer) and we'll review it to see if it's do-able.

Thanks for the input, it really helps when we start running out of ideas smile.gif

yeah...i wanted one more thing addeded to this site,if i have replied to some question.then then there should be some way to know that my replied actually helped the user.

so there should be something like this,a user must accept answer to a question for putting the question in PAQ area.u know it is very encouraging if ur suggestion helped someone.here i see many users post a question and then just forget it.or maybe they check and even if the answer helped them, they won't bother to reply back, that ok ur solution helped.frankly it sucks and discourage me very much to reply further even if i know the answer.

checkout http://experts-exchange.com they have very good forum setup.though we certainly we don't want the point system.but many things can be adopted from that website.

and one more thing,we can divide the site in different regions like programming,system-administration etc..

enough of asking...will any of u bother to check out our GNU/Linux user group website.our group is based in Trichy(INDIA).

Yeah, although having said that, the ones where no ones answered and I though that I might be able to get a solution to my problems I've e-mailed them just by hitting the e-mail button at the bottom of each post. Both times i've tried this and got a good response.

If there was someone to follow up, didn't even need to be a techie, just someone with admin rites to the PAQ's page would do, it was there job to check up on each question and supposed answer.

Incidently, once an answer is given and problems solved . . . maybe having an admin close the topic so no one can add to it, again maybe something a PAQ's admin person could do.

Now now, getting personal with the admin ain't a good idea when there's things we want them to do for us . . . I mean i'm sure they are doing the best job that they can.

Hay, tourettes what do you think? I e-mailed you my idea like you asked, what do you think? Is it duable?

Please, anyone else think a PAQ's page is any good, providing that it's kept up to date etc etc?

Still awaiting some admin comment wink.gif

This sounds quite good in theory. It would take a while to set up. It sounds like an extended FAQ page. Perhaps if people find it useful they could click a voting button and so the more common solutions are at the top of the list?

Can we get this particular topic to the front page so that visibility of this topic remains and discussion continues?

Hiya Giblet,

Thanks for sharing your views. . . . that's great. The topic moves to the front when someone puts a new post.

I was thinking that instead of having questions and appropriate solutions that vary on how good they are rated. Having a list of what the solution is and the question and a PAQ number, this would aid looking for specific topics because you have a look at the list of what the paq's are, maybe a different page that displays more info on the paq. The paq's would be closed so only admin can edit them (save restarting a closed topic) and the paqs would be stored in reverse numerical order.
