Hi all,

I got a Dell Inspiron 6400. I have installed a Red Hat Linux Enterprise WS 3 on it. Can have 1024x768 resolution. But I would like to have 1280x800, which is the maximum resolution that in Windows XP can get.

The monitor type is Dell E177FPm.
The chipset is Intel® 945GM.
Graphic Card should be Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950™

The moniter is not there in the Applications>> System Settings >> Display >> Hardware, so I choose Generic LCD Display >> LCD Panel 1280x800.

The graphic card I use VESA.

How can I let my Linux can have the same resolution as what I can get from Windows XP?

I will wait online, any advice is deeply appreciated!!!

I have RedHat Enterprise workstation 3 64-bit.

When I try to start it, I get an error like: "An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for Evolution. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly." Meanwhile, I can still see some menus, folders and files. I can still see text in screen.
The error details are:

See http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ for information. So, after that, I checked /root/.gconfd/lock/ior. There is indeed no suck a folder "lock". So I copied another folder "lock" with file "ior" inside.

Then I restart, this time I can not even see any text through whole screen...

I deleted "lock" with "ior" inside, reboot, still all menu are empty and I can not see any text but whole screen of error windows...

Please help. thanks a lot!

I have referred to following webpages, but seems not very my problem:

for "home/david/: no such file or directory" message, seems it is given by the FTP server:
********************************************************************************
********
FTP replies error
InterScan HTTP Version 3.8-Build_3013 $Date: 01/20/2004 13:22:0038$

ftp server replies:

500 'RETR ': command not understood.

home/david/: no such file or directory.
********************************************************************************
********
I never made any change for the RH EW4, and dunno why /home/david now is home/david.

For "A: success, can view folder / file by text. But can not save folder. "
Yeah, I can see a list of directories and files, but i can only save as target files, not for directory, becase that window is a webpage in a browser, there is no folder view.

Hi Guys,

I used to paste an thread about FTP login from XP "Network places" into my Linux Home folder /home/david of a Linux Enterprise Workstation 4 machine (RH EW4). The old article is "http://www.linuxhelp.ca/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=3&t=6448", that issue now has been fixed, thanks to Termina and all guys helped me before.

That problem can be elimated by removing -a option in file "/etc/xinetd.d/gssftp", in the line "server_args".

Now the new problem is like this
********************************************************************************
********
An error occurred opening the folder in the FTP server, Make sure you have permission to access that folder,
Details:
The server name or address could not be resolved
********************************************************************************
********

The entry I made in XP Network places is "ftp://david:mypassword@12.34.567.89" 123456789 is ip address. I did similar things to Red hat 9, solaris all no problem.

I made another try by go to XP>IE>Options>advanced>browsing>and Unchecked " Enable folder view for FTP sites", now I will have two possibilities, sometimes A sometimes B.

A: success, can view folder / file by text. But can not save folder.
B: Warning message like this:
********************************************************************************
********
FTP replies error
InterScan HTTP Version 3.8-Build_3013 $Date: 01/20/2004 13:22:0038$
ftp server replies:
500 'RETR ': command not understood.
home/david/: no such file or directory
********************************************************************************
********

Please advise! I am so keen to solve it. I am not an system engineer but solving Linux issue is just so fun and remaining problem is so frustrating....

Yours truly,
Dunhill

Of course in the LAN. In our LAN, i like to let these three PCs to communication with each other:
1 Windows XP: A
1 RH 9:B user (dunhill), ftp folder (dunhill)
1 RHE4:C user (dunhill), ftp folder (dunhill)

From machine A, go to "My network Place" , add connection as " ftp://dunhill:mypassword@xxx.xx.xx.xxx" then I can go to B, but similarly i can not go to C, the warning is as above i posted...

the command iptables -F is for what purpose?

Dear Termina,

I have a valid user account (work) at the Linux machine, it has a full-controlled 777 home directory /home/work, and its shell is /bin/bash. The setting is so similiar to Red Hat 9 in which i did not encounter any problem to use ftp to user work's directory from my PC.

Originally I use the Windows network place, new entry is like this ftp://work:workpassword@xx.xxx.xx.xx/

After see your post, I tried ftp://work:workpassword@xx.xxx.xx.xx in a browser, it failed. Warning is like this:
Windows can not access the folder, Make sure you typed the file name correctly and you have the permission to access that file.
Details: connection with the server has been reset.

What is the problem of this?

Hi,

For RH9, i can use the ftp in windows. but for RHE3:
Windows can not access this folder, Make sure you typed file name correctly and that you have permission to access the folder.
Details,
220 RHE3 FTP server (version 5.60) ready,
530 Must perform authentication before identifying USER.

For RHE4, warning/error message is the same. what is wrong? I check the service in RHE3 and RHE4, in System Settings--Server Settings--Service, I check the server gssftp but i can neither start or stop this service. what should I do? sad.gif

Please help me on this issue. Btw, for a newbie like me, how should I start to learn? read books? if so any recommendatioins?
