QUOTE (hughesjr @ Apr 5 2004, 05:27 AM)
Suse (or Mandrake) are KDE default distros, so if you're a KDE user, I would recommned one of those distros for you ... but I have never had a problem getting KDE to work in FedoraCore or RedHat 9. I am a Gnome user, so I don't spend a lot of time in KDE ... but Joey (the board owner) does and he uses RedHat 9 with KDE.

I would LOVE to know how Joey pulled this off after the research I did and the answers I found. I like both KDE and GNOME, but want the option to use both in their FULL funtionality. I look forward to your repsonse and thank you all for your help.

All,
I have come to find out this is just a function of RH9 and Fedora and what they did with Gnome and KDE. Gnome is default for everything and it is a b**ch to get KDE to work. So I ditched both for Suse and everything is running great. Thanks for your help.

From personal experience (as I just did a fresh install of both Suse 9 pro and XP this weekend) install your XP first, get it up and running and then use partition magic to make a seperate Linux EXT2 (default for PM) partition. It will automatically put it in front of you MS install, but that is fine. Then use your Fedora Cd to boot from and install directly to the EXT2 partiton. You will be able to make it EXT3, or Reiser or whatever. This will make dual booting much smoother. At least it has for me. The only choice you will have to make at the boot loader is which partition to make default boot parititon.

If you have any further questions, I am sure one of these smart ppl can help.

Ok all, I did a fresh install of RH 9 and made sure to do the "everything install" and made sure all packages were checked. They system is also fully up to date with all updates!

Here is the results of what I can find about KDE:

[root@amdrhlinux9 root]# updatedb

[root@amdrhlinux9 root]# locate kdeinit | grep bin
/usr/bin/kdeinit_shutdown
/usr/bin/kdeinit
/usr/bin/kdeinit_wrapper
/usr/lib/kde2-compat/bin/kdeinit_shutdown
/usr/lib/kde2-compat/bin/kdeinit
/usr/lib/kde2-compat/bin/kdeinit_wrapper

[root@amdrhlinux9 root]# echo $PATH
/usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/opt/xess6/bin:/root/bin

[root@amdrhlinux9 root]# which kdeinit
/usr/bin/kdeinit

[root@amdrhlinux9 etc]# more ld.so.conf
/usr/kerberos/lib
/usr/X11R6/lib
/usr/lib/mysql
/usr/lib/qt2/lib
/usr/lib/qt-3.0/lib

I am not sure why KDE won't work and all the KDE programs are not showing up, but I would SO appreciate it if someone could help me fix this. Thank you very much in advance!! Have a great day!!

You can change your preferences on whether or not you want to use gpg keys signing or not. I always used it with RH 8 & 9 because I was downloading errata updates straight from RH. With the Fedora Core NOT being supported by RH none of the updates have the gpg key installed with them.

Go to your up2date preferences and just uncheck the gpg key.

This should work!!

I installed the "everything" install from the gui in the rh9 cd's. The weird thing is that if I go back to rh8 and do the "everything" install kde works just fine and I have all the kde proggies. I am very confused here. My kde works great on my suse 9 pro install and on rh8 if I install it.

Please tell me what you think this might be.

Thank you very much,

I have read a lot about Gentoo, but from a person who feels fairly comfortable with Linux (fairly being the operative word here of course) it looks like a MAJOR pain in the butt to install. I am running RH 9 Pro and Suse 9 Pro and like Suse MUCH better than RH 9.

I am always open to the cutting edge, but from reading on Gentoo's site, this looks rather intimidating for someone with my Linux skill set.

Any advice, opinions or bashing is accepted.................. biggrin.gif

Here is what I get with that command:

[root@rhlinux9 root]# which kdeinit
/usr/bin/kdeinit
[root@rhlinux9 root]#

I am hoping one of you wonderful ppl can help me get this RH 9 Pro install working correctly with my KDE features. Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.

duende,
Thank you. I will try this once I finish ditching the Fedora Core, I really don't like it so I am going back to RH9 and it should be done later today.

I will try this and if unsuccessful, I will post my KDE location so you can assist me some more.

I TRULY appreciate your help!!!!!!!!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Hi All,
I have just did a new install of Fedora Core 1 and am running into a problem when I try to log into KDE for the session.

I keep get the "could not start/find kdeinit. Check you installation"

I then went to RH's site and found an OLD article on it, and tried their mod to the ld.so.conf file and then ran ldconfig, but nothing worked.

Here is the RH link I used: http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/dml_fetch.pl?C...stance=&Shared=

I would like to be able to log into KDE and also use all the features of KDE. I also ran into this with RH9 and couldn't figure it out. The last working KDE session seemed to be on RH8.

If anyone could help me fix this, I would GREATLY appreciate it biggrin.gif:D

Thank you VERY much,

Rockstar biggrin.gif:D
