Couldn't find a fix so I put the Kensington on another box with Mepis and it work fine. Put a MS wireless adapted to PS/2 and it works perfect with Suse and Mandriva.

I installed a Kensington cordless mouse on my dual boot box and it works great on Suse 9.3 but is jerky and slow on Mandriva 2006. I set it to "USB" but it keeps defaulting to "Universal P/S2, USB" which is where I had it before with a MS intellimouse with a ps/2 usb adapter. This is my xorg.conf file:

Thanks for the reply. rc update "command not found", /etc/init.d/guarddog start "no such file or directory".

The guarddog configuring panel, i.e. enter root password then click "ok" anywhere to start, then close it out and it's running. If I just reboot and check at pcflank or gibson it's blocked but not stealthed. If I start it, log into guarddog with the root password like you were going to configure it and click "ok" at the bottom, then a box opens and "iptables" is set up then click "continue" then "ok" and it's running and stealthed. Anyway, with Mandrake I just set it up and forgot about it, at boot it was running and "stealthed".

I have used guarddog in Mandrake and never had this problem. But in Xandros 3 guarddog won't start at boot. I have to log in as if to config and click "ok" to get it going. Does anyone have any idea how I can get it to start at boot-up? Thanks.

I get this when I run "alsaconf"
alsaconf
device_mode int, description "Device file permission mask for devfs."
which: no dialog in (/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin)
which: no whiptail in (/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin)
Error, dialog or whiptail not found.

I have no idea what that means.

It's really baffling. I got the system sound stopped but every other problem eludes me. Kaffeine crashes, real player files skip, xine works on pls and wax but not asf, win32 is installed. I can't understand what sent linux to hell by the installation and removal of a soundblaster card.

Mandrake 9.2. I had a soundblaster live board installed and removed 3 days ago and my sound on Mandrake has been bad since then. OS XP-MDK 9.2 dual boot. Windows sound is fine. The "system sound" in MDK 9.2 seems stuck, like a drum over and over. RealPlayer crashes and it's audio is like a broken record. I been fighting this for days and can't seem to gain on it. I've reinstalled several times with no change. What am I missing?

I bought a 60g hard drive to install in my XP/Mandrake 9.2 box. I was thinking of installing XP on the 60G and linux on the exitsting 40G. Clean install on both. How can I dual boot from 2 drives? Is there a better way to do this than I suggested so as not to have to reinstall everything? Thanks in advance.

I've tried more times than I will mention to get mplayer to work. When I was successful at getting it installed, I still couldn't get anything out of it. I always had to resort to an rpm.
Maybe I'll have better luck with MDK 10.

I got xmms fixed by reinstalling. My sound problem isn't too bad, scatches when coming on or going off. Xmms has never worked well for me, it skips. I have another box with Damnsmall on it and it skips too. I'm going to install 10.1 Official in a few days.
Today I've been fighting xine. I can get it to connect to windoze asf but no audio. So I deleted xine and got gxine. I've read that it will play windoze asf. It's in the plugin and I have the codecs but no go. I had been trying to get that to work when everything went to sh..t on me. Thanks for the replies. It took me longer to get back here because when I reinstalled I lost everything and I couldn't remember the name of this forum.

Thanks for the replies. I reinstalled xmms and it still won't load. I have several gtk files installed. Kaffeine and gxine load ok. My OS is Mandrake 9.2. I have been having considerable trouble with it. I've been using it for a year and a couple of days ago I was trying to upgrade kaffeine and it wanted another file, libXinerama.so.1 and it's been downhill since then. That file removed several others of which I didn't pay attention. My sound is all messed up, scatchy. And I get sound server message errors.http://www.linuxhelp.ca/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=10&t=5285. So I've been going through everything to see what works and what doesn't. I do have sound now but poor quality. I've used the upgrade install process to try and fix it but it still has a way to go.

How can I fix that? I've had alot of system problems and I'm trying to get them as I find them. Thanks.

I was attempting to install Kaffeine .5 from rpm and it kept wanting more libs. The last one was the above. When it installed it said that some packages had to be removed. I thought it was some of the ones I'd been trying to get kaffeine to install with. WRONG! I don't know what it took out but I noticed right away a change in the fonts. So I thought I'd reboot (Windoze logic) and see if all would be ok. Not so, all kinds of sound warnings. One in particular that comes on at start up:" Sound Server Warning Message: Can't set real-time scheduling priority. You need to run artswrapper as root or setuid root". Whatever that means. So now I have some sound, system sounds on internet connection, and pls. Asf connects and plays w/o audio, Real crashes after it loads and freezes up. I tried to do an upgrade install so I won't lose all my apps and such but that hasn't worked. Thanks for anything you throw my way.

The Win32 Codec installed in /usr/lib but still no go on that mentioned site, other asf sites will play but there are two that won't. I installed Kaffeine to see if that made any difference but it does the same thing. It's odd that it will hook up to it, obviously recognising the file but won't play.http://airamericaradio.com/ this is the other one I can't get on the windows platform. Real works fine. By the way, how come kaffeine doesn't have a plugin, re: gxine-gxineplugin.so? My version of gxine (rpm) has only the .so plugin not the .la and .a. Thanks again for the reply.

Thanks for the reply. How do I link gxine to the win codecs? I have found that since I posted that "gxine" will play "asp and asf" w/o win 32 codecs. I was having an overall sound problem that was cured by reinstalling the OS (MDK 9.2)

I have gxine 3.3-4mdk installed on my dual boot XP-MDK 9.2 OS. I downloaded it from an rpm. I have Opera 7.60 TP2 installed. I can't get gxine to play windows asf files, even though they're listed in the plugin. Gxine will launch, load up 60%, and buffer to 16% and freeze. Here's one site http://blog.radioleft.com/. I works fine on pls and mpeg and others. I know the usual response I get is to use mplayer, but I have tried it many times and it just won't work on my OS, freezes. I would certainly appreciate any help with getting gxine to work. Thanks in advance. That's "asf" files, made a mistake in my subject line.

I've been using Opera for 3 years now and you do have to buy it to remove the banner ad. Sometimes they have a deal where you can get a Windows and a Linux version for less than buying 2, in the event you have a dual boot OS. Opera is by far the best browser out there and it's worth the $40. The online support is superb, unlike Mozilla.
