i have a Dell Inspiron 2600 laptop and am currently running mandrake 10 with 2.6 kernel

i have tried to set up APM for the power management eg standby and suspend which i still cant get to work properly
i also have no battery monitor so i have no idea how much time i have left.

so what i'm getting to is i have been advised to go to ACPI which is APM's successor but have aslo been told i have to recompile my kernel (being a newbie this is a bit daunting but i would like to learn how anyway.

i have seen how-to's for ACPI that talk about seting or recompiling the 2.4 kernel, i just want ot know for shore if i must with 2.6

if i must can u please tell me where to find a good tut on how to recompile a kernel

thanks
graham

ok i have discoverd that when i use "adsl-status" it sais the connection is up but when i go to "control center->system->services it sais that adsl is down and when i try start it just sais connection timeout
i then could not start the service again using "adsl-start"
when i checked the pppoe.conf file the eth1 device had been removed then when i added it back in and used "adsl-start" it connected but i still cannot browse the net

does this maybe meen that somewhere the browser does not know which NIC to use?

if so what do i have to set? if not what else could be the prob?

i have setup adsl using adsl-setup and then when i use adsl-start that aslo works and it makes a connection

BUT i can't actually do anything or go anywhere
i've tried mozilla and konqueror

i'm using mandrake 10

pppoe is connecting thru my eth1 card with and ip of 192.168.1.150 to the adsl ROUTER with ip 192.168.1.1
(the fixed ip on eth1 is necessary because i have 2 adsl account and the router is set up to send traffice for my account to and from that ip)

why can i not surf the net???

hey sorry for all this hastle but i really don't know what to do. i have tried uninstalling the device and reinstalling but it still won't start at boot.

where to from here? i know with windows when it seems to get stuck like this it usually means reinstall.
i don't really want to do that.

i think this started when i tried to set up my adsl but i have no idea what i did that would have done this.

i tried that cat /etc/modules.conf
result:
alias eth1 8139too
alias eth0

and as for looking in messages:
i'm not too sure what i'm looking for and it took me about 15 mins to scroll thru but i found this:

Sep 1 22:13:49 localhost ifplugd(eth0)[3902]: Using detection mode: SIOCGMIIPHY
Sep 1 22:13:49 localhost ifplugd(eth0)[3902]: Initialization complete, link beat not detected.
Sep 1 22:13:49 localhost network: Bringing up interface eth0: failed

i also tried
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.151 netmask 255.255.255.0
this added the address to the nic properties when i used the ifsonfig command and seemed to work but when i reboot it fails again and it is set to start at boot - see above

another thing is (maybe this will help or make the situation worse i'm not sure) i had dhcp running and its doesn't seam to exist anymore either

atleast when i try start it it just does nothing aswell no error nothing

hughesjr thats pretty much what i would like to see too
esspecially the part with "2 NICs, one connected to your cable/DSL modem ... the other to your internal network. Allow all your internal PCs go to the internet." and setting up dhcp for the internal LAN pc too.
but once that is set up i will be doing all the rest aswell its pretty much exactly what i need

thats currently what i'm struggling with mad.gif

i had this all working before with my LAN connected to eth0 and assigning IP's to the comps connected using dhcp.

i have just got adsl and was wanting to set that up on eth1 and share the internet connection to the network

i starting setting up the ppoe and adsl account on the linux box and it con't connect but anyway thats the next issue, for the mo it seams to have broken my dhcp sever setting i cant stop or start or anything to the service.

i'm using mandrake 10 and i used to write "service dhcpd restart" for eg and it would give me that
stopping dhcpd [ OK ]
starting dhcpd [ OK ]

now it does nothing no error nothing
eth0 is also down and i have no idea how to get it back up

thanks in advance for you time

I have a small network at home running Mandrake 10 as the server with 2 network card,
the first card (eth0) is used for the internal which connects to a hub and the rest of the network machines (which use windows XP)
The other card (eth1) will be connected to an ADSL modem which I will be getting within the next week or so.

I will need to give internet sharing from the linux server to the rest of the network
I have already set up DHCP on the network and is working fine.

As far as I know you need to set up Dynamic DNS on the linux box because of the DHCP (as apposed to just DNS) although I知 not 100% sure if I even know what I知 talking about huh.gif

Anyway I would like to set this up also so that I can use the sever as a web server nut not necessarily as a live web server (just internal for now).

I have done a lot of reading but still unsure of what ALL I need to do.
For e.g. do I need PPP or PPPd <- not actually sure the diff.?, IPTables? DDNS? IP forwarding? all of the above?

In the last two weeks since getting linux I have had such an information overload (which I have been loving) I知 starting to get confused in it all.

Thanks in adv.

hughesjr it was dhcpd.
i did that and got the result:

dhcpd 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off

i dont know what that means and doesn't seem to have solved the prob

NodMercinary, you can download from http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/ just do a search for "dhcp 3" and u will find one for your dstro

i have followed all the instruction and it is working YAY although only when i start it in the shell.
the thing is when i went into the services through the gui to turn on dhcp at boot i noticed that it sais dhcpd is stopped and it just fails when i try start it(even though it is running from the shell). why is this?
i did try installing a dhcp rpm, could this cause the prob as it is using the rpm package instead of the package that came with mandrake.(i did this before i new mandrake already had one :-
if that is so what can i do to resolve it.
also need to know how to start dhcp at boot

thanks ppl for the help so far smile.gif

i have already followed the first link and completed all that. i will try the second and see if that makes a difference when i get home. The thing is the actual dhcpd service won't start i have also set it to start at boot but fails everytime.
i'll let u know the result after i try the second link.

Hi
I致e just started using linux for the first time and will be using it for a server and internet firewall router etc etc
I知 running mandrake 10 and it痴 been a great first impression. smile.gif
I have looked in the linux section on how to set up dhcp but being new I知 still not 100% sure what is going on.
I think I have most the stuff setup eg the dhcpd.conf but when I try start the dhcp service it just sais failed
Does anybody know what the prob might be or could go through a step by step procedure of getting it set up
thanks
