Yeah. Two ways istall openoffice on the Windoze box and/or just make sure the document has MS Word compatible file type such as .doc

I can still get into X with startx command but this is a little odd because I never had this problem with Mandrake. Any suggestions would be great. Sorry about the size of this post.

I'm running Mandrake 9.1 for the last several months with no problems, till today. For some reason my /dev/cdrom & /dev/floopy no longer exist. I did install win4lin 5.0 do you think that the new kernel might be broken? Any suggestions or advice will be appreciated. Im stil a newbie.

Sounds like you have a winmodem. I recommend getting an external modem because they are a hardware modem vs a software modem. Should be a lot easier than trying to configure a winmodem. Good luck! biggrin.gif

Hi, I'm having the same problem myself. I tried changing
from Mandrake 9.1 to SuSE 8.2 & now my monitor went dead.
Cntrl Alt Backspace dont work but I can get in safe mode
via GRUB but config Xfree86 is a little beyond me @ the
moment but I'll try later. Until then I'm going to reload
Mandrake for the moment. I dual boot with win98 for my
wife & I'm not that great @ configuring GRUB so that
windows can be detected.
For you newbies like me that don't know anything about
Linux I recommend Mandrake to start with. Just my opinion.
BTW my pc is a HP vectra xe310 950mhz 384 ram 20GB HD
everything else standard for the time being.

My friend is giving me an old Dell 133mhz laptop & I was thinking of installing Linux on it as sole OS. I dont have the complete stats on the notebook yet, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a distro that has a small installation & is fairly easy to use because I'm still a newb. I'm only familiar with Mandrake @ this time. Also anyone know how to configure a laptop modem? Any suggestions appreciated.

Are you able to get into Mandrake control center? If so just tweak your mouse options under hardware until it works. If that doesnt work throw in your distro disc & do an update then just make sure your mouse settings are correct. (I know that probably not the CORRECT way to do it but it worked for me) Good luck!

Bummer. Would that mean a problem with the software I purchased, if so I'm SOL because it's Loki Software. Is there anywhere where I can get any help on resolving this? Thanks

Hi, I installed Mandrake 9.0 a few days ago so far so good except that the modem don't work (Winmodem) no big deal I'm getting an external modem. The problem is my sound doesn't work anymore while running Mandrake. It works fine under Win98 so I know sound card is good. Any suggestions? sad.gif

Hi, I'm another nube. Quick question. I just loaded Mandrake 9.0 & I'm having trouble getting the OS to reconize my modem Lucent Winmodem. Could I just mount the modem the way you mount the CD ROM? Except for not being able to connect to the net this is a nice OS. Lots to learn though.
