To continue...

Because I thought it was actually successful I carried on. I find the right driver using the AMD website. The rpm is named differently this time; it used to be something like fglrx64_p_i_c-15.302-1.x86_64 but now it is fglrx64_p_i_c-14.50-1.x86_64_RHEL6_64a.rpm. When I try installing this new one I get yet more issues (I should have stopped long before this point, I know) (When I say install I mean I did rpm -U -h -v fglrx64_.....rpm):

[zack@minnow02 AMD_Driver_Packages]$ sudo rpm -U -h -v fglrx64_p_i_c--5.201.1151-1.x86_64_RHEL6_64a.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]

....

Things look good at first, however when I go to System > Preferences > AMD Catalyst Control Center it gave me the following error message: i imgur com 0QcF5mD.png

So I decide to do aticonfig --initial because I thought maybe it would fix the problem, and then reboot. Instead when I rebooted I got a black screen. I had to reboot in single user mode and do aticonfig --uninstall to fix it, and now I'm back at square one.

When I do "ls /etc/X11/" it looks like this:

appInk prefdm xinit xorg.conf.d xorg.conf.fglrx-1 xorg.conf.original-1 fontpath.d xdm Xmodmap xorg.conf.fglrx-0 xorg.conf.original-0 Xresources

So I am having a lot of difficulties getting a graphics driver working on my CentOS 6 running laptop. After I get that working I want to get it so that OpenCL can use the Radeon HD 7550M as device, but for now let's focus on getting the graphics card driver installed. Here is the history of what has happened:

A while ago I got an rpm for what I thought was a good graphics driver for my laptop, when it didn't work I gave up on it for a while and started working on something else (without a graphics card driver installed). Later I returned to the problem and what I thought was the problem was that simply hadn't initialized it via aticonfig. So I do aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf. At first it seemed to work but then when I used to monitors this would happen: i imgur com lh4zHVi.jpg ...and when I do a print screen it looks like this: i imgur com 6UWPvfi.png (which is how it should look) so at least it thinks it's working fine.

I find the rpm I used for the driver and trying updating it; I get this which looks like it's already updated:

[root@minnow02 zack]# rpm -U -v -h /root/rpmbuild/RPMS/x86_64/fglrx64_p_i_c-15.302-1.x86_64.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
package fglrx64_p_i_c-15.302-1.x86_64 is already installed

So I decided to uninstall and reinstall using a different rpm; when I did aticonfig --uninstall I got this:

[root@minnow02 zack]# sudo aticonfig --uninstall
prelink: /tmp/#prelink#.cxK9Gk: Recorded 2 dependencies, now seeing -1

prelink: /usr/sbin/atieventsd: at least one of file's dependencies has changed since prelinking
One or more files have been altered since installation.
Uninstall not completed. Please see /etc/ati/fglrx-uninstall.log for details.

But when I looked inside of the fglrx-uninstall.log I got this, which looks like a success?:

*** AMD Proprietary Driver Uninstall Log 2016-11-16 12:31:33 ***

I am running CentOS 6. My OpenCL program is not detecting my graphics card as an option and is instead just running on my CPU. My program attempts to find and use the fastest device, but is only finding one option. I am certain that this is because of my drivers (or lack thereof), not because of my OpenCL code because when I run my exact program on another machine it does run on the GPU.

OpenCL Platform 0: AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing
OpenCL Device 0: Intel® Core™ i7-3612QM CPU @ 2.10GHz Gflops 16.808000

Open CL Device: Intel® Core™ i7-3612QM CPU @ 2.10GHz

I have found multiple ways to inform myself that there is an issue. glxinfo gives me the following:

name of display: :0.0
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

lspci tells me that I have two VGA controllers, which from my understanding should never be the case:

lspci -v | grep "VGA controller"

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Thames [Radeon HD 7550M/7570M/7650M] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

(Obviously the one I want to use is the second one; the Radeon graphics card)

My Xorg.*.log(s) don't mention anything about AMD. It states the following, which I presume is significant (using intel as autoconfigured driver instead of amd?):

[ 31.269] (==) Matched intel as autoconfigured driver 0
