QUOTE (hughesjr @ Apr 22 2004, 06:52 AM)
You will get all updates except the kernel. I always download and upgrade my kernel by hand ... to get the lastest on go here and get the kernel that matches your machine ... probably either:

kernel-2.4.25.3mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm

or

kernel-2.6.3.8mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm

i saw a i686 and up kernel.... what ix86 is P4 platform considered?

QUOTE (hughesjr @ Apr 22 2004, 06:52 AM)
I have a very similar test machine (it is a VIA Apollo PRO133x, PIII 800mhz machine with a soundblaster live).

I haven't had any problems with sound at all.

Have you upgraded to the latest packages from Mandrake ...

No sir - i have not yet upgraded... i have mandrake 10...updates are already avalable? even for kernel? wow! i didnt think M10 was out for THAT long.

i remember installing m10 2 weeks prior on the same machine with same CD:
i dont remember the beep sound:
1) it wasnt there
2) my speakers were off

(lol ^^^ usefull info eh?!)

i guess i will start the upgrade - i never done nething like this so i think i will have more questions about the upgrade...so please stay with me...

more info:

i found the source of the simptom: the "PCM" (what is that?) in KMix - when its enabled and over 3/4 "raised" it creates the beeeeeeeeep sound that "evolves" in much worser sounding beeping sound (changes frequency) as i raise the bar more.

THANKS for the tip finegan [from linuxquestions.org]!!!

i dont want to stop here - i want to learn and anhilate the problem thats causing the the PCM to make the horible sound, especialy as i need to record some stuff of the tape deck and this could cause problems..i forsee

TIA!!!

ok lil bit more info:

i reinstalled mandrake 10 again to see if it fixes the anomaly here is some posibly usefull data:

1) beeeeep sound was non existant till after KDE started loading (globe icon or one b4 it) the FIRST time
2) after that first time the beep is there AS SOON AS login prompt comes up.

[to answer the question] 3) NO the "noise" NEVER ends

i havent installed anything else except what mandrake 10 installed for me
