Hi,

I am a linx newbie and needing to write a simple external command for Linux. What language do I use? perl? If so, i'm not that great with perl ...i'm mostly a PHP, JavaScript, sorta guy. So, i'm hoping someone can help me. All I need to do is to write a script that will look for a string input and then run a command with the string in it. Like this:

The string variable input:
"hello, how are you?"

The scripts output:
echo "string variable"

I know this will be a simple script I just need to know what language I use for shell scripting in linux and hoping someone can show me somthing using the example above so I can see the syntax from this to get me started.

Much thanks

Thanks

I have Mandrake 9.1 and have added a .Xinitrc and .Xsession in my home directory and added some customized start up programs (gnome and enlightment together). When I boot the computer it works like I want it to....BUT....when I log out to the login manager and select enlightment and then log back in then it does not use my start up script. What script is the login manager using to start each windows manager?

Thanks

Robb

After scouring the internet I think I have found that I need to start the Gnome panel to do what I'm wanting to do in Enlightenment. What is the command to start the Gnome panel from a terminal?

Ok, I"m a newbie but starting to learn a lot (thanks to a lot of help from this board). I have Mandrake 9.1 and like Enlightenment but I wan't to also have the flexiblity of adding desktop icons. I understand that you can run Gnome and Enlightenment together but I can't figure out how to do this in Mandrake 9.1. While logged into Enlightenment i opened a terminal and typed "GMC" and it says there is no command by that name. If I log into Gnome and type the command for Enlightenment it says that another windows manager is already running.

How do you do this? Can someone tell me step by step how to get these to run together?

Thanks

In the other instructions it mentions somthing about Video4Linux. Is that somthing I need to download and compile too?

THanks

I'm still lost.....

Thanks for the help but you still didn't tell me where i'm suppose to untar this "o" file that you said is the module. Where am I suppose to put it before I recompile the kernel? I have to put it somewhere and the readme doessn't say!?

What part of the ultra soul instructions are you speficially talking about that won't work with Mandrake?

Ok,

I have a new install of Mandrake 9.1 and trying to install a driver to make my Intel CS330 webcam work with gnomemeeting.

I found a driver and downloaded it from http://sourceforge.net/projects/spca50x/.

It has one file in it called "spca50x.o"

I also found a How-To located at http://www.ultrasoul.com/~lukewarm/spca50x/HOWTO

The directions speak of compiling the driver by source and using:

# Compile the driver from source
make KINCLUDE=/usr/src/linux/include

Ok....Now i'm lost. When I un-tar this file spca50x.o, what directory am I suppose to un-tar it to?????? What directory am I suppose to run this commmand (make KINCLUDE=/usr/src/linux/include) from????

Can somone please tell me step by step what I'm suppose to do. It looks like this how-to left out a bunch of steps......at least for a newbie like me.

Thanks guys!!

Robb

I installed a hard drive in place of a CD Rom. KDE still has the icon for the CD Rom on the desktop and the system still thinks that it IS a cd rom. I have Mandrake 9.1. How do I get KDE/Linux to "automatically" see the changes?? Or how do I manually make them??

Thanks

Ok, well. Thanks for all the suggestions. I have already tried everything you suggested. I finally found out that I had a bad partition. I removed one CD Rom and added another hard drive. I'm moving some of my files that are improtant to me that I want to keep and and then I will have to format the drive. I finally got lilo to work with the other drive I installed.

Thanks for all the help you supplied!

Ok, I've decided to foget about my Maxi Sound card because i've had no luck getting it two work under Linux.

What is the best sound card to get that has the best "out of the box" support under Mandrake 9.1?

Sound Blaster 16?

Sound Blaster Live?

Any otheres?

I don't want to have to rebuild the kernel or anything, I would rather just get a sound card that the system can find and it will work.

Thanks!

You read my mind. I tried to install System Commander and it said that I have a problem with lba conversion. It said that the disk was reporting different readings. So, I tried lba32 and I also tried linear but neither worked. Now I'm getting the L 99 error. I think what must have happend is that I was using something like EZ Boot and forgot that I was and when lilo wrote over the MBA it wrote over that also.

Any suggestion?

Hi,

Both my hard drives are slaves and I have cd-roms for the masters. I had to do this to make the system see everything.

I thought maybe that was the problem but it won't boot from a floppy also. When I try using grub I get a geom error.

After researching this I'm wondering if it is the bios and I should try the lilo "linear" or "lba" options, especially since I have an NTFS partition in front of my linux partitions on hdb.

I thought about trying to boot from hdc1 instead of hdc (MBR). I understand that you can copy certain files to a windows partition and boot from it but I don't know how to accomplish that.

Any suggestion ??? blink.gif

Ok, I have two disks.

Disk One: (hdb)
Windows XP NTFS Partition (hdb1)
/(Linux root) Partition (hdb5)
Linux Swap Partition (hdb6)
Linux /home Partition (hdb7)

Disk Two: (hdc)
Windows FAT32 (hdc1)

I installed Mandrake 9.1 and have tried to install Lilo on the MBR of hdb and get an L 02 02 02 02 02 error (the windows partition is active). I can make the bios boot from hdc also and get the same problem installing on the MBR there. I was going to try to install lilo on the "/" partition but I can't make it active using FDISK or Lilo. Wierd....it was working before using XP till I let lilo overwrite the MBR. Since then I've tried to remove lilo and it won't ..... says there is no lilo signature even though I get L 02 02 02 02 error. Well, I thought ok...I'll just intall lilo to a floppy. Same thing...I get the L 02 02 02 02 error there also. The only way I can boot is into linux from my Mandrake 9.1 CD or the boot disk I made during install.

HELP! Even Microsoft tech support had no clue what to do since they don't know a thing about LiLo.

Thanks

Robb

I would like to install LiLo on a Floppy. Does anyone know how to do this? My MBR is obviously messed up and I can't boot in to my Win Xp partition. LiLo gives me a L 02 02 02 02 02 02 error so I would like to put it on a floppy so I can boot either system. Is that possible? If so can someone tell me (in detail) how to do this?

Thanks

I am a linux newbie and have a Maxi Sound 64 sound card and have not had luck with getting Mandrake 9.1 to make it work. After scouring the internet I have found out that there is a driver that will make it work. The driver is sam9407. I downloaded the source code but when I try to compile it I get all kinds of errors so I have been looking for an .rpm that has been compiled. The only one I found was made for the SuSe distro. Will that work on Mandrake? I thought it may and installed it but so far am still not having luck. Is there anything bad about installing a rpm that was made for a different distro? Should I uninstall that?

I did find a Kernnel rpm that says it has the sam9407 drivers built in if I understand it right but I'm not sure what it does. Does it rebuild the Kernnel of does it just add extra stuff?

kernel-multimedia-smp-2.4.21.0.18mdk-1-1mdk.rpm
the link is:
http://rpms.mandrakeclub.com/rpms/mandrake...-1mdk.i586.html

I also found this and again....i'm not sure what it does but it says it has support for the drivers. I did install this one but don't know what to do now?!?

alsa-driver-headers-0.9.0rc2-alt9.i586.rpm

Please excuse my ignorance but I am new to linux and still learning. Please help if you can....

Thanks..

Robb
