Just wondering if any one knows of a good video editor/convertor/compressor app for linux. I need something similar to TMPGEnc http://www.tmpgenc.net/ which is a windows app.

Cheers

Thanks for the help have found the problem.

Was talking to a guy i get second hand computers through so he knows of heaps of little querky problems...

He has had problems with hp mainboards and running samsung drives together finds them and says working but just doesnt..

Replaced my btc drive with a LG drive and works perfectly... the BTC drive i put in another machine and works perfectly. Just a compatibility issue with that mainboard im guessing.

Thanks again

Sorry yes... tend to overlook writing the little things i guess after 13 years computing lol.. cable ok jumpers ok... it detects it fine in bios... burns just doesnt read :-|

Have since tried the cdrom in another machine and it works fine... put another drive into its place and same problem... im guessing something with motherboard but dunno where to start.

Maybe faulty??? just a side note... tried to change bus speed from 100mhz to 133 and it just wont boot at all? am i missing something? or does it sound like something wrong with motherboard.

Cheers

Any ideas?

Hey all

Trying to use ghost for multicasting...

Has worked fine in the past but not on this machine..

Im having problems connecting to the server machine and i think its something to do with the NIC.

When i load the packet driver eg... rtspkt 0x7e

it returns a mac address of FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF which is a broadcast address isnt it?

I have tried with two different cards one Realtek 8139 and one Realtek 8029AS and removed any other network cards to avoid conflicts.

Any Ideas?

Hey evry1

This is more of a windows question but thought someone may have come across this...

I setup a redhat 9.0 gateway box a while ago... and its the dhcp server for the building. At the moment we have no way of controlling the students internet access so the tutors just disconnect their rooms from the rest of the network.

The problem occurs randomly on some of the clients.. We have 95,98,ME,NT,2K and XP clients.... so far i have only seen the problem on the 9X clients.

What happens is the machine gets its ip details eg...

192.168.100.222
255.255.255.0
192.168.100.1

and randomly the client somehow changes its subnet to 255.255.0.0

This then stops them from printing in the room as the print server machine (just another client in the same room) still has the correct subnet 255.255.255.0

I cannot see any other details that have changed. It wont be the students fooling around or anything its just an office skills course.

Any tips appreciated.

Here is my dhcp.conf from the server

default-lease-time 1209600;
max-lease-time 2592000;
ddns-update-style ad-hoc;
option domain-name-servers 203.97.33.14 , 203.97.37.14;

subnet 192.168.100.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
range 192.168.100.10 192.168.100.250;
option routers 192.168.100.1;
}

The long leases are because i know that the tutors disconnect there rooms from the network from time to time.

Cheers

Hey all smile.gif

Just at work and needed to monitor the network usage at our gateway and thought this might be of interest to you.

vnstat --> http://humdi.net/vnstat/

This is a really simple app for monitoring network traffic.

I pulled down MRTG because ive used it at home but just too complex/time consuming for the simple task i needed. Something quick and easy was required. Although this doesnt do web output like MRTG or have a gui, it is nice and simple.

Installing:

First go grab the latest version from http://humdi.net/vnstat/
(at time of writing it was vnstat-1.4.tar.gz - source (25.6 kB)

next untar and unzip the file to somewhere like /usr/local/src
CODE
tar xzvf vnstat-1.4.tar.gz

move into the newly created dir (/usr/local/src/vnstat-1.4) and begin installing
CODE
cd /usr/local/src/vnstat-1.4
make
make install

Some kernels maybe broken and unable to run with vnstat so you need to run this command to make sure everything is happy smile.gif
CODE
vnstat --testkernel

And last but not least we need to tell vnstat which network interfaces we want it to monitor. This will monitor eth0 only. If you want to monitor other interfaces simply type it again with a different interface on the end tongue.gif
CODE
vnstat -u -i eth0

If you would like to give your network interfaces names for the output use this code
CODE
vnstat -u -i eth0 --nick internet
vnstat -u -o eth1 --nick local

Thats it biggrin.gif all installed

To have a look at what is going on simply type in one of the following options
CODE
vnstat        -->   simple summary
vnstat -d   -->    daily summary
vnstat -w   -->   weekly summary
vnstat -m   -->   monthly summary

There are more options and ways of installing than i have shown... this is just a quick simple setup..

For more info see the man or web page http://humdi.net/vnstat/

Enjoy

Wolfsta tongue.gif

P.S My first guide, simple i know but comments (corrections unsure.gif) appreciated smile.gif

Hey smile.gif

Here is a good link about that it explains mounting windows in linux and linux in windows.

http://www.linuxworld.com/story/32941.htm

Tools such as:

LTools (for DOS and Windows 3.x, 9x, and NT)
explore2fs (for Windows 95 and Windows NT)
FSDext2 (for Windows 9x)
ext2fsnt (for NT)

hope that helps smile.gif

Hi all smile.gif

Does anyone know of a virus tool for linux that can remove viruses from a windows drive?

I have quite a few ppl asking me to get rid of viruses for them. It would be heaps easier if i didnt have to bother with booting up the machine and worrying bout safemode etc to remove the virus. Rather just put the windows drive into a removable tray, clean the viruses under linux, then put the drive back all done?

Cheers

Good point tongue.gif

Yeah i realise that but you can still create folders on the host and map them as drives in the vmware machine which ever way around it is (windows as host or linux as host)... and could use that folder for copying... But yes u are right tongue.gif a network between both is much nicer wink.gif

Hey smile.gif

You need to mount your windows partition to be able to access the files from within VMWare/Linux. If you have a Fat32 partition you need to run something like

mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows

The /dev/hda1 will depend on where abouts your Windows partition resides on your harddisk...

eg... hda1 = primary master partition 1
hda2 = primary master partition 2
hdb1 = primary slave partition 1
hdc1 = secondary master partition 1
etc
etc

you will need to make the /mnt/windows dir first.

From within linux you should then be able to browse your windows files in that dir. Then in VMWare you need to map a drive to that folder so that the windows within VMWare is able to see that folder.

Sorry at work so dont have VMWare here and cant remember the steps off the top of my head.

Which version of Windows are you running? And do you know if its NTFS or Fat32?
I havent been up on the play with NTFS development under linux someone else might know what sort of stage thats at now.

Ive read that other ppl are having the same problems and cant find drivers and like me they cant get a generic one to even print a single drop of ink on the page.
