Linuxhelp _ Tips and Tricks _ Print To A Windows Shared Printer

Posted by: hkufahl Mar 12 2004, 07:18 PM

I want to use my Epson C82 as my printer for my Mandrake 9.2 machine. I have setup samba and can access all shared items on the Windows machine. The printer is shared, but I have not been able to print to it. I used PrinterDrake to attempt to setup the Epson, but it was not able to detect the network printer. I then set it up using the ip address of the Windows machine and the default port 9100. This does not work.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks blink.gif

Pick smb printer not network printer....

Using PrinterDrake, I need to enter
SMB server host
SMB server IP
Share name
User name
Are these for the Windows machine or the Linux machine?
I have tried using info from LinNeighborhood in these fields, but still get no test print.

O.K. I have a simular problem. I have SuSE 9.0 Pro and I can not get my printer to work either. I have the printer setup on my Windows machine and all my windows computers can print to it fine. In Yast there is a nice printer setup. I can choose SMB Network and it brings up the information that I need to enter. How do I find these out? I have a Linksys router and my main machine is Is that the ip or host or what?

SMB server host
SMB server IP
Share name
User name

O.K. I got SuSE to where I choose SMB shared printer(windows). I press next. It then asks for User Identification on the next screen. I choose Guest Account or do I choose to enter in username/password? I did the later and entered in my username/password and then pressed Next. Now is where I get confused. It now asks for Workgroup, Server, and Printer. I can do a scan and it sees my workgroup(which is named workgroup) and it sees my windows machine but does not show the printer. It just give my Thomas-46l36f74 machine name. What do I put in the Workgroup, Server, and Printer fields?

you enter a valid user login for the windows machine for usename and password

workgroup is the windows machine's workgroup name

server is the windows machine's name (or IP address) that the printer is connected to

Printer is the share name of the printer ... in windows, you have to share the printer and and give it a share name (it is best if the name contains no spaces and only letters, numbers and - )

It actually was the fault of my windows machine. Very strange. What I did was this:

1-on my windows machine I clicked on My Computer and then My Network Places.
2-then I clicked on Setup a home or small office network.
3-clicked next a few times and then choose the 3rd option in Windows XP which is labled OTHER
4-chose the first one on the next page which is 'this computer connects to the internet via network hub' which is my router.
5-clicked next and just followed the directions and named a new workgroup.
6-restarted the computer and then went in and went in and unchecked the Windows XP Firewall and restarted.
7-went over to my SuSE 9.0 Pro machine and opened up controls/peripherals/printers.
8-clicked on the admin button on the lower left and went into the Yast Admin panel
9-I then just click on Add Printer at the top and followed the directions for SMB(Windows).
10-I then pressed on Scan and it found the new Workgroup that I created with my Windows XP machine and the printer.
11-Finally, I just clicked on the +'s and it found the printer. I clicked next and just filled out the simple questions for the printer and did a test page!!!

I hope this helps everyone!!!!

Moved this topic into the Tips and Tricks forum because I believe the documentation here is pretty valuable for others setting up a shared windows printer in linux.

I have left a link in a Tech support forum so it can be found.
