Linuxhelp _ Technical Support _ Debian stops working completely

Posted by: bacafe Dec 1 2011, 04:43 AM

hello everyone.

I have a debian server that appears to completely stop working after a random amount of time. I just got 2 months out of it, but now I'm barely getting a few days.

When I say it stops working, I mean it stops working. I can't get an image on the monitor, I can't toggle caps lock/num lock etc. I can't ping it at all, however the lights on the NIC stay on, indicating that there is a connection. The only thing I can do it reboot it. I have checked dmesg immediately after rebooting it when this happens, and as far as I can see, there is nothing wrong.

I have put my dmesg on http://pastebin.com/f7F3Uq80

I'm thinking it's hardware though, but maybe I'm missing something. I have taken out all the hardware, and reseated it properly. As yet, I have not had an issue with it doing that, but that was only a few hours ago.

Thank you for any help smile.gif

Nothing obvious in the output of dmesg.
Might want enable smart and make sure nothing is wrong with the hard drive.
There could be power supply problems as well as some individual component on the mother board that is failing possibly due to heat.

Can you post the hardware specifications?

Hello there.
I useed to have an Acer laptop for a very long time, but now I had to install Linux on it and I'm kinda confused.
And I have no one to ask, because all my friends use Windows or MAC OS.
So can you tell me, please, is it ok that I don't have any folders or anything else on my desk top?
And I can't set another wallpaper. It's so strange.

Gwen,
What linux distribution are you running?
If all you see is a cursor and a blank screen and not even a tool bar then x windows desktop GUI) may not be functioning correctly. Also are you logged in as root or a regular user?
Most distributions disable root login via the desktop vut if enabled are only setup with a min configuration.

OK. So currently it has a M2N8-VMX board, two 2TB WD green drives and a 20GB IDE drive for the OS (yes, I know.. IDE, ugh.. hehe) It has 4GB of RAM, the on board video and a 350W PSU

I have just put in a new PSU (450W Gigabyte PSU), and I can try a new hard drive if the PSU doesn't fix the problem.

Visually, I can see no blown caps or anything, but it's not always visible. FYI, I have squeeze installed. I've read that squeeze already has some issues with the video problem (it won't boot unless a monitor is plugged in).

Thanks for the help smile.gif
