Linuxhelp _ Technical Support _ Installing a new kernel

Posted by: wajed Jun 29 2011, 06:08 AM

I am trying to install a kernel that I have compiled, following a tutorial. The commands won't work.

I am following this tutorial: http://kerneltrap.org/node/799 and I reached "Step 6: Install your new kernel." But as I said, it ain't working.

What linux distribution / version are you running?
Looks like the tutorial missed a step. Once you move the new kernel to /boot the bootloader menu must be modified for it to boot. Modifying the bootloader depends on the distribution since it could be either legacy grub, grub2 or lilo. You do not want to copy over an existing kernel image because if it does not work you can not revert back to the old one.
