Linuxhelp _ Technical Support _ Complete *nix Noob - Anonymous FTP?

Posted by: Eambo Mar 3 2011, 12:15 PM

Hi Everyone!

I'm hoping someone has the patience and niceties to help out a big noob with a (small?) problem.

As mentioned, I'm 110% new to *nix, and I've just rented myself a shiny VPS! This is (currently) running CentOS 5. I've got FTP set up, and web set up (geez was that some learning for someone with no knowledge of *nix!)

I'm currently looking at getting anonymous FTP to work, but restrict where they have access to. I essentially want them to have read only access to /var/www/Files - no folders above this.

Is this possible? I currently have anon_root set to this, however when I log in it doesn't bring me there :-( Any suggestions for a newbie? Much appreciated! :-)

Did you restart the ftp server after you changed the configuration file?
How are you logging in?

Thanks for your response :-) I'm using Filezilla in Anonymous mode to log in, and I did indeed restart. At one point I pointed the anon_root to an incorrect folder and it gave me an error on login - when I pointed to the folder I wanted it logged me in but didn't actually direct me to that folder :-( I'll double check when I get home, however!
