Linuxhelp _ Technical Support _ complete ignorance

Posted by: JadenP Feb 14 2011, 05:26 AM

Hi, i finally made the jump to linux after hearing about all the sweet features over the years and am perplexed and just dumbfounded on where to go from here. Obviously experience is a must, but i seem to just be lost as a whole thus far.

A few days ago, i wiped my harddrive clean using kill disk and the only way i could get my computer to recognize an operating system was by using the ultimate boot disk and the parted magic linus setup.

I have ub ' downloaded(the iso that is) and i'd like to run it however when i pop the ultimate boot disk out of my cd-rom upon restart i am prompted wit h the missing operating system message and when im using the parted magic system im not able to gain access and open the Ub'' iso/program to upgrade. I wish this was the biggest of my problems, i also am not able to fully grasp what im actually doing with the ultimate boot disk, as to why should i have to have it in my cd-rom to be able to finally gain access to my computer. I was under the impression that by booting it and loading the parted magic system it would be written to my drive so that i could run it naturally and regain access to my cd-rom drive. However that doesnt seem possible.

I also am not able to completely and legibly read the font and which im typing at or reading these forums. Is there a way to make the font bigger when browsing with Mozilla? Or is this an obsolete browsing software on linux? I've manually went and changed the preferences/general/font size but still to no avail.

Also, why does my "Mount" popup keep popping up, am i somehow running on a different partition because i remember having a bunch more space,

If any of yall could help me out with some of my problems, it'd be so great fully appreciated. Im lost and need help in this big intriguing new world

Welcome to linuxhelp
Your post is somewhat confusing. The ultimate boot and parted magic are just hard disk utilities/repair live CDs. A live CD will lock the drive since it is still in use.

Wiping your hard drive left it completely blank. No operating system, no data. The only way to use your computer is to run a live CD or install a new operating system to the hard drive.

What linux distribution did you want to install? I suggest downloading Ubuntu and hopefully you have another computer to create a bootable CD. It is also a live CD but you can then install it to hard drive. Since you have completely wiped the hard drive you might want to use parted first to recreate a partition table.

Hi, thank you so much for the response. I apologize for the initial post, as i tried to mention i was not able to re-read what i actually typed as the font was terribly small whilst doing so.

My conundrum is that after using the killdisk im not able to load an operating system, or i am having problems doing so. the only way i can actually get on my computer is by loading the boot disk and then using parted magic. I have downloaded Ubuntu multiple times and burned it with absolutely no luck loading the iso to my computer. If you could help me with retrieving an active working operating system it'd be greatly appreciated.

How did you burn the Ubuntu CD? What application did you use to create the CD and what happens when you boot the computer using the Ubuntu CD?
