Linuxhelp _ Technical Support _ Moving system from one computer to another

Posted by: Billm Apr 19 2009, 09:10 AM

I have a Gentoo x86 system with a 2.6 kernel that I built from scratch, compiled the kernel etc.. I have used this system for several years. It is a Samba, print, and file server. My processor chip died so I want to move the system to another computer that I have. The main difference is that the old processor was an AMD Athlon and the new one is a Pentium 4. I gutted the original computer and installed everything into the new computer. The system spans three hard drives, one drive is just an 800Mb swap file. The next drive (5 Gb) has the /root, /boot, /var. The third (120Gb) has /home, /usr and other file directories. If I boot the system the lilo menu comes up and if I pick Gentoo (the only selection) it starts to go but stops after it says " Uncompressing Linux OK" . I assume I need to recompile the kernel, but what is the best way to do this without losing the data and existing system I have. Thanks for any help
