Linuxhelp _ Technical Support _ New Hard drive

Posted by: docmur Aug 6 2008, 01:58 PM

So I just bought new 750 GB HDD SATA and I partitioned it and mkfs.ext3 on it and all these steps tell me 750GB. Well I then mkdir /mnt/storage and mount my new HDD there only to find it's only giving me 650GB of free space.

when I run DF is registers that I have 750 GB, CFDISK and FDISK both register 750GB so my question is where did the 100 GB go, any ideas ?

Thanks

Did you forget about ext2/3 5% default reserved space?

not I didn't forget about that, I didn't know about it. Is there a way to get the 5% back ?

By default when a ext2/3 filesystem is created 5% is reserved for root use. This is suppose to prevent fragmentation as well as allow root to login in case the
filesystem becomes full. Use tune2fs to modify the reserved space to 0%
